CHAPTER EIGHT
The Capital Under Siege
The journey to Moonfall Capital was silent.
Rain battered the armored convoy as it raced through the ancient forest roads.
Inside the vehicle, Aria sat beside the window, watching the dark trees blur past.
Nobody spoke.
Not Lucien.
Not Damien.
Not the warriors surrounding them.
The atmosphere was tense.
Heavy.
As if everyone knew something terrible was waiting ahead.
Aria glanced at Lucien.
The Alpha King sat across from her, his expression unreadable.
He hadn't said much since the Elder's announcement.
"It is her."
Those three words still echoed in her mind.
Who exactly was she?
The Moon Queen?
A prophecy?
A threat?
Every answer only seemed to create more questions.
The silver mark on her wrist pulsed beneath her sleeve.
A reminder that her old life was gone forever.
Hours earlier she had been an ordinary university student.
Now she was traveling toward a city under attack because of a prophecy she barely understood.
The realization was terrifying.
A sudden crackle came through Damien's communication device.
His face immediately darkened.
"Another district has fallen."
Lucien's eyes sharpened.
"Casualties?"
A pause followed.
Too long.
Far too long.
"Unknown."
Silence filled the vehicle.
Aria's stomach twisted.
Real people were suffering.
Real families.
Children.
Mothers.
Fathers.
Because of a war she didn't understand.
Because of powers she never asked for.
For the first time, guilt began settling heavily on her shoulders.
---
An hour later, the forest opened.
Moonfall Capital appeared in the distance.
Aria's breath caught.
The city was magnificent.
Massive silver towers rose into the sky.
Ancient walls surrounded the kingdom.
Moon-shaped monuments decorated the landscape.
Rivers reflected glowing crystal bridges.
It looked like a kingdom from a fantasy novel.
A hidden civilization untouched by time.
Then she noticed the smoke.
Thick black smoke rising from multiple districts.
Flames illuminated the horizon.
Explosions echoed across the city.
The beauty disappeared beneath the horror.
Moonfall was under siege.
The convoy crossed the gates.
Panic immediately surrounded them.
Citizens ran through the streets.
Warriors rushed toward defensive positions.
Healers treated the wounded.
Everywhere Aria looked, fear stared back.
A young boy sat beside a damaged building, crying while clutching his injured arm.
Nearby, an elderly woman desperately searched the crowd for someone.
The sight broke Aria's heart.
This wasn't just a battle.
This was a tragedy.
The convoy stopped near the royal district.
Lucien stepped out first.
Instantly, dozens of commanders rushed toward him.
Relief crossed their faces.
Their king had arrived.
"Alpha King."
The captain saluted.
"We've been waiting for you."
Lucien nodded.
"Report."
The captain spread a map across the hood of a vehicle.
"The eastern district is lost."
His finger moved.
"The southern district is barely holding."
Another movement.
"The northern defenses are under constant attack."
Lucien studied the map carefully.
His expression grew darker with every update.
"The Council?"
The captain swallowed.
"They're leading the assault personally."
Damien cursed.
Aria recognized the name immediately.
The Shadow Council.
The enemy responsible for all of this.
The same people who attacked her wedding.
The same people hunting her.
The same people determined to kill her.
Fear crawled through her chest.
---
Suddenly, a scream echoed nearby.
A child.
Aria turned instantly.
A building was collapsing.
Flames consumed the upper floors.
Citizens scattered.
Several warriors rushed forward.
Too late.
A little girl stood trapped beneath fallen debris.
Her tiny hands clawed desperately at the rubble.
Tears streamed down her face.
"Help me!"
The desperate cry pierced Aria's heart.
Without thinking, she ran.
"Aria!"
Lucien's voice thundered behind her.
She ignored him.
The girl's terror reminded her of herself.
Alone.
Powerless.
Afraid.
She couldn't stand by and watch.
Not again.
The fire roared as she approached.
Heat blasted against her skin.
The flames should have stopped her.
They didn't.
The silver mark suddenly glowed.
The crescent moon blazed beneath her skin.
A strange warmth spread through her body.
Then the impossible happened.
The fire moved.
It parted.
Like a living thing obeying her command.
Gasps erupted around her.
Warriors stopped fighting.
Citizens froze.
Everyone stared.
Aria barely noticed.
She rushed through the opening.
Reached the child.
Lifted the debris.
And pulled the little girl free.
The crowd erupted into cheers.
The child wrapped her arms around Aria's neck.
Sobbing.
Alive.
Safe.
For a brief moment, hope spread across the frightened city.
Then pain exploded through Aria's wrist.
She cried out.
The world vanished.
---
Darkness surrounded her.
The battlefield disappeared.
The city disappeared.
Everything disappeared.
Aria found herself standing beneath a silver sky.
A massive throne stood before her.
Moonlight covered every surface.
The air felt ancient.
Sacred.
A woman stood beside the throne.
Silver eyes.
Silver hair.
A silver crown.
The same woman from the previous visions.
This time she looked worried.
Terrified.
"You're running out of time."
Aria stared.
"Who are you?"
The woman's expression softened.
For a moment, sadness crossed her face.
The kind of sadness carried for centuries.
"I was once what you are becoming."
A chill swept through Aria.
"The Moon Queen?"
The woman nodded.
"Long ago."
Aria's heart pounded.
Questions flooded her mind.
Thousands of questions.
Before she could ask them, the woman pointed north.
Toward distant mountains.
"Find the Key."
"What key?"
"The Key of Shadows."
The throne room trembled.
Cracks spread across the silver floor.
Fear flashed through the woman's eyes.
"He's waking."
Aria frowned.
"Who?"
The answer sent ice through her veins.
"The Shadow King."
---
The vision shattered.
Reality slammed back into place.
Aria staggered.
Strong arms immediately caught her.
Lucien.
Concern filled his eyes.
"What happened?"
The crowd watched silently.
Waiting.
Aria struggled to breathe.
"There was a woman."
Lucien froze.
"The silver-eyed woman?"
Aria stared.
"You know about her?"
Lucien looked away.
A dangerous silence followed.
Finally he answered.
"Only from legends."
The response did nothing to calm her fears.
Before either could speak again, a deep roar shook the city.
The ground trembled.
Buildings rattled.
Every warrior froze.
Every commander turned pale.
The roar came again.
Louder.
Closer.
Aria slowly looked toward the city walls.
Something enormous emerged from the darkness beyond.
A creature taller than the defensive towers.
Covered in black armor-like scales.
Its glowing red eyes burned like fire.
Citizens screamed.
Warriors stumbled backward.
Even experienced fighters looked terrified.
The monster's gaze moved across the city.
Searching.
Hunting.
Then it stopped.
Its eyes locked directly onto Aria.
A horrifying smile spread across its face.
And in a voice that seemed to shake the heavens themselves, it spoke.
"Moon Queen."
The city fell silent.
"At last... I've found you."
