Chapter 10 The ancient Greeks had a word for it, Arthur [Birk’s voice said]. They called it hubris, which has been translated as “o’erweening pride.” It’s what happens when a man gets too puffed up with his own sense of self-importance. He thinks he can do nothing wrong, and his actions challenge the gods themselves. Well, the gods usually weren’t happy about such challenges, and they found all sorts of clever and humiliating ways to strike back….
