Dawn and Dusk looked at each and smiled. Then they opened their mouths and began wailing. Assa was startled by the sound. She jerked her head back and put her hands up to her ears. What, what, she said.
Dawn and Dusk stopped. See, they said, that’s what you heard the other night, isn’t it?
It’s exactly what I heard. You mean that sound was you?
The twins nodded.
But I thought I was hearing the sound of the land.
Not exactly, said Dawn. But sort of.
Yeah, said Dusk. See, we’re completely homesick for our island. We can’t stand it here. We’re so sad so much of the time, that we end up crying and wailing.
