You know what they say - time flies like a thief in the night. It’s already been a week since I started bartending at White Rabbit. On the first night, Trinity introduced me to Danny; the head of bartending on my floor and he has been serving as my supervisor of some sort. Prior to this, the only drink I’ve ever made in my life was a Screwdriver which is essentially just orange juice and vodka so Danny was getting pretty frustrated with my lack of mixology skills.
He gave me a handbook filled with drinks and their ingredients and although it’s only been a week, I have most of it memorized. Danny doesn’t know it yet but, he’s going to grow from thinking I’m a pain in the ass to thinking I’m the most reliable bartender ever. I can’t help it. Even in this place, I still can’t control that urge in me to be the best. I can’t tame my hunger for competition.
I’m positioned behind my counter, my hair in a high ponytail and my eyelids painted in gold glitter as I attend to customers. Luckily for me, I haven’t encountered any of the lunatics that Trinity warned me about. From my position, I have a pretty decent view of the polls and I can identify some of the angels by their names now. The one with the menacing glare and godlike cheekbones is Willow, the blonde is Felicity and Sera is the petite one. I can also identify all of the bartenders on this floor. There’s only four of us; me, Russo, Rick and Danny. Russo and Rick are nice enough although Rick seems to be the most popular bartender on our floor. I don't know if it's his boyish pretty looks or his elaborate drink menu but whatever he's doing, he's doing it right. In my head, I've already decided that he's my major competition. I laugh at myself for already brewing war with this unsuspecting guy but, it's the healthy amount of competition that keeps me sane.
Two days ago, I moved away from Holiday and to a motel that’s a walkable distance from White Rabbit. It’s definitely an upgrade and I took the risk because I don’t have to worry about gas money for a while since I can walk to work. Also not having Rainer in my face every two seconds makes me feel like I truly am away from home. Speaking of Rainer, I didn’t tell him when I left. I know he’d find me if he wants to but, that’s up to him. I appreciate our last conversation…..and our last kiss. But, I know I have to separate myself from my old life and that includes Rainer.
Things are slowing down a bit at my counter as more people flock towards Rick and Danny. I use the opportunity to catch a break and make a drink for myself. We're allowed to have only one drink but, always remain as sover and sharp as possible. I catch a glimpse of the clock and see that it’s already midnight. Just as I’m about to be done mixing my drink, I see Trinity approaching me. She’s donned in her elegant wings which are a little bigger and brighter than all the other angels, her thick dark hair crowns her head and her lingerie is the deepest shade of orange which compliments her complexion perfectly;
“Hera”, she sings my name;" So to officially bring you into the fold, you have to come with us to a work party tonight”, she uses her fingers to do air quotes around the work party. So it's not really a work party then.
“Work party?”,
“It’s Asher’s and Derek’s birthday today and we celebrate it in grand style every year. This year is even more important because we are doing it in honour of Derek. It's what he would have wanted.”, she says solemnly but, then brightens up again like she's trying to stay positive. She called all these names of people I don’t know yet. Are they the owners? I assumed Sam might have a hand in White Rabbit but all the papers I signed didn’t have his name on them. According to the documents, White Rabbit is owned by a ‘Zula Blake’. After I got the job, I tried to reach out to Sam severally to thank him but, his line has been available.
I want to ask her, who's Asher? who's Derek?....what happened to Derek? but, before I can speak she adds;
“We’re leaving in thirty minutes”,
“When you say ‘we’, you mean…?”, I ask genuinely because I’m not sure if she means all the staff or just a select few;
“You, me, Willow, Rick and a few others you don’t know yet. It’s strictly by invitation and you got an invite. Everyone gets one at some point”, she informs me. I’m about to decline when she adds;
“It’s at Samael’s so Dothan is coming to give us a ride there”, Once again Sam is the magic word. I have to admit, I was caught off guard when I heard her refer to him as Samael the first time. All through high school, I remember everyone called him Sammy and I always thought his full name was Samuel. Anyway, once Trinity mentions that the party is at Sam’s, I know I have to go. Thankfully, I recognize Dothan's name. He is her boyfriend and a regular face here at White Rabbit.
“Yeah, okay. I’d love to come”, I say causing her to beam. She reminds me that we’d be leaving in 30 minutes so I should be down soon then she proceeds to where Willow is.
I finish making my drink, a simple Margarita and I down it as fast as I can. Then I go inform Danny that I’d be leaving soon as opposed to when we are allowed to leave around 3 - 4 am.
“Oh, you got invited! Have fun new girl”, he says excitedly as he shoos me away.
I don’t really talk to Russo or Rick so, I make my way downstairs when I’m done with Danny. Trinity is at the entrance door and she waves for me to come. I do.
Outside, I see Willow and Dothan. I guess Rick and whoever else are coming later in a seperate ride. Thank goodness.
“Oh you got invited”, Willow says. She doesn't say it with the same excitement Danny spoke in but, rather dismissively. It’s the first thing she’s said to me. Technically I haven’t said anything to her yet and I choose not to. She has a pretty cold stare but, so do I. Willow gives me major mean girl vibes but, we had many of those in the compound and they never intimidated me.
“C’mon girls, let’s go”, Trinity breaks the ice as she hops into the front seat beside Dothan. They share a steamy kiss which might seem extra but, every time I see them together, they’re sharing steamy kisses. Willow rolls her eyes and gets into the back seat. I get in after her and I know it’s going to be a long ride sitting next to her. I don’t think she likes me very much but, then again she has no reason to like me yet. So I’m not bothered by it.
The drive starts off as awkward but, luckily Trinity turns on the radio and some familiar tunes come on. She starts singing along and soon Dothan joins her. Even Willow joins in at some point and by the time we arrive at Samael’s, we’re all in a giddy mood and we ride the elevator up to his place together as one happy bunch.
