When The Walls Finally Broke

CHAPTER 7: WHEN THE WALLS FINALLY BROKE The first breach wasn’t dramatic. It was quiet. Too quiet. That was what made it terrifying. Amara stood frozen in the dining hall as the distant sounds outside suddenly stopped. No explosions. No movement. No alarms. Just silence. A clean, unnatural silence. Then the lights flickered again. But this time, they didn’t stabilize. They dimmed. Slowly. Like the mansion itself was losing power. A servant rushed in, breath uneven. “Outer gate is down,” he said quickly. No panic in his voice. Only confirmation. Like he had expected it. Another voice crackled from a communication device. “They bypassed perimeter security in under three minutes.” A pause. Then colder: “They’re inside the compound.” Amara’s chest tightened. Inside. Not outside anymore. Inside. The elders immediately stood. No hesitation now. No confusion. Only reaction. The matriarch’s expression hardened. “Full lockdown protocol.” Doors began sealing automatically across the mansion. Heavy mechanical sounds echoed through the walls. One by one. Click. Lock. Seal. Amara took a step back instinctively. “What is coming inside?” she asked. No one answered her. Not because they didn’t hear. But because it wasn’t their priority anymore. Then— a sound. Not loud. Not distant. Close. Too close. Footsteps. Inside the mansion corridor. The servants at the entrance backed away instantly. A man in security uniform ran past the dining hall door— and didn’t make it two steps further. He stopped. Dropped. Silently. No scream. No struggle. Just… collapse. Amara’s breath caught. “What—what happened to him?” Dami Aderemi was already moving. Dami Aderemi Not running. Not rushing. Walking. Like he had done this before. Many times. The matriarch turned sharply. “Dami—” But he didn’t stop. Only said one thing: “Stay inside the core room.” Then paused slightly. His eyes flicked briefly toward Amara. “And don’t let her leave this hall.” Amara’s heart tightened. “Me?” she said. But he was already gone. The hall doors sealed shut behind him. Heavy metal locking in place. The sound echoed like a final decision. For a moment, everything was still again. Then— a new sound. Closer. Not footsteps this time. Dragging. Metal scraping against marble. Slow. Intentional. One of the elders stepped forward slightly. “They’re not targeting the family directly,” he muttered. A pause. “They’re searching.” Amara frowned. “Searching for what?” No one answered. But the matriarch’s eyes shifted slightly toward her wrist. The bracelet pulsed once. Hard. Visible now. Not subtle anymore. Amara grabbed her wrist slightly. “What is this reacting to?” Silence. Then the matriarch spoke. Low. Controlled. “…So it’s true.” Amara stepped back. “What’s true?” But before she could get an answer— the dining hall lights shut off completely. Darkness swallowed the room. Emergency lights activated instantly. Red glow. Weak illumination. Enough to see shapes. Not enough to feel safe. Then— a voice came from the corridor outside. Not loud. Not urgent. Calm. Too calm. And it didn’t belong to anyone inside the mansion. A stranger spoke: “We know she’s here.” Amara froze. The bracelet pulsed again. Twice now. Faster. Stronger. The matriarch’s expression changed for the first time. Not fear. Concern. Controlled concern. She turned slightly toward Amara. “…You were marked.” Amara’s voice shook slightly. “By who?” The matriarch didn’t answer directly. Only said: “By the ones this house was built to avoid.” Another sound. Closer. The corridor door outside the hall bent slightly inward. Something was forcing it. Slowly. Patiently. Amara’s breathing became uneven. “I don’t understand any of this,” she whispered. The matriarch finally looked at her fully. And said something that made everything worse. “You were never a replacement bride.” A pause. “You were bait.” The door outside the hall cracked slightly. Metal giving way. A shadow appeared through the gap. And at that exact moment— the bracelet on Amara’s wrist pulsed a third time.
