According to indian traditions once you have been married to a person you are expected to serve without questioning even if you receive nothing in return but I thought my marriage would be different and no doubt it was for a year but then eventually I found myself in the same category serving my husband without expectations
"Naina! Where are you? Where are my damn socks?" Gaurav's loud voice startled me, I kept our wedding frame down over the side table and walked over to the bedroom upstairs,
I saw him move bare foot around the room impatiently; he then saw me and stood with his hands over his waist
"How many times have I told you to leave them where they are?" He spoke angrily which was expected after all I had ruined his day of prominence and prestige
"They were dirty Gaurav, they smelled awfully bad." I argued and his anger boiled up as I could see it in his eyes
"Where are they?" He questioned sternly
"In the drawer where they are usually kept.." He glared then reached for his socks in the drawer.
"Once you were done washing them you could have just placed them back in the shoes." He mumbled as he wore them on before stepping into the shoes
"You know, it’s strange that you're complaining today when you never did before." He continued to glare at me.
"I’m not in the mood to argue Naina..just don’t touch my things and if you do then make sure you keep them back." He stood up and fixed his look in front of the mirror then headed downstairs ignoring me completely, I sighed and followed him behind, he then took out some papers from the cabinet and stored them in the briefcase
"I’m sorry Gaurav..I’m sorry for yesterday...” I murmured meekly as I saw him arrange some files in his briefcase.
"You wanted to know right? Why I behaved like that in the party...It was because...”
Suddenly I heard the locks of his briefcase snap shut
"It really doesn’t matter now Naina, what’s done is done! Your explanation wouldn’t change the fact that I walked away from my own success party so just save it." He carried the briefcase in his hand as he walked over to the front door.
"Gaurav...Wait!..at least have breakfast before you leave." His hand reached for the doorknob.
"It's fine, I'll have it in the cafeteria.." Well my apology didn’t work and Gaurav still held me against it.
"Wow! Someone's in a hurry" I saw Kiran standing outside the door with the hand outstretched to ring up the doorbell, Gaurav without a friendly greet walked past her and I knew Kiran would figure out something's happened between us.
"Or maybe..Just in a bad mood I guess." she was puzzled as she eyed me and I gestured her to come in while Gaurav got into his car to leave for work.
"What happened? You guys had a fight or Something?" Kiran followed me to the kitchen as she handed me the two packets of milk.
"It’s kind of complicated than that." I made a helpless face and she chuckled slightly.
"Yeah I bet...I could make out from Gaurav's as usual stinky face." I rolled my eyes at her and poured the milk into the kettle.
"It’s not funny Kiran..You know how he is...It’s frustrating sometimes to make him understand." I then boiled the kettle above the stove.
"Oh please! Don’t tell me you guys had a fight over dancing the bare-butt rhumba?" I looked at her in shock.
"What? No! Gosh Kiran!" I shook my head in disgust.
"What! It’s better than saying banging each other under the same roof."
Kiran and her blatant talks were sometimes embarrassing to handle but at the same time extremely fun to hear,
Kiran being a housewife herself with two adorable twins was the only woman that knew me completely and somehow brought laughter and zeal into my unsocial life
"It's’s not that..We just disagreed on something...Not a big deal really...how are the little ones doing?" I asked smilingly
"Ugh don’t ask! Since the day they have joined these silly ballet classes they just swirl and hop around the whole place...it’s like a physical torture to my eyes." I laughed at her annoyed expression because I knew she couldn't stand her daughter's in those tight fitted ballet costumes.
"Don’t say that..Those outfits look cute on them...” I defended with a grin as I poured milk in two different mugs.
"See! That's why I feel you should be their mother instead of me...I just...They tire me out Naina. These days they have all sorts of pointless demands and...” Kiran continued to complain about their crazy interests as I mixed coffee and sugar in the mugs.
"Well they are kids with endless energy, Kiran...what would you expect and being a mom I feel, you should totally support them." I smiled warmly and handed her the hot coffee mug.
"You know you sound like a 60year old grandma maybe that’s why Gaurav doesn’t want to hear you and just wants to get down to the real raunchy action." My mouth opened in shock to disapprove.
"God! I’m just kidding! Relax." She covered immediately as she continued to laugh staring at my awe stricken face.
"Not funny.. again!" I glared at her as we went and sat over the couch with the mugs
"By the way, I forgot to tell you, Gaurav just got promoted to senior head scientist at his company." I spoke as I took a sip of the hot coffee.
"Ohmygod! And you're telling me this now? Then what exactly happened between you two?" She questioned me in total confusion.
"No.. It’s just, he took me to this success party of his yesterday and I made him leave abruptly in the middle of the whole thing...but you know, I wouldn’t have if his Boss would have kept his dirty hands to himself." Just imagining his boss's overconfident face infuriated me to the extreme.
"Wait what! Gaurav’s Boss hitting on you?" She looked perplexed.
"I don’t know what it was but definitely not decent and much like.. uncivilized on his part." My mood got worse just thinking about it.
"So um..Was he hot by any chance?" My eyes grew bigger as I stopped before taking another sip and looked back at her.
"Kiran..!" I grumbled.
"What! I’m just curious and don’t tell me you didn’t check him out yourself."
Hearing her words my mind immediately thought of his intense green eyes, his beautifully carved Italian face with the perfectly trimmed French beard, his smooth hand running along my skin as he daringly stared into my eyes, all I had were questions but not the courage to ask.
“Well, you did, huh?” her voice shook me back from my daze as I quickly pulled my attention to her, she was watching me now with a crooked smile
“So.. is he hotter than Gaurav? How old did he look to you?” Kiran asked eagerly
“Much older for you to even ask and please! he doesn’t stand a chance against my Gaurav.“I smiled proudly and took her coffee mug to wash it off in the sink
“Hey I wasn’t done with that..” she whined reaching out for it.
“Yes, you are Madam because I have to take bath and you need to go prepare meal for your daughters as they would be at home soon.” she instantly kept a hand over her forehead.
“Holy s**t!..I totally forgot but its fine with you right? If they come over here and eat at your place.” She spoke with a cheesy grin.
“Nope...This time it’s not!” I spoke sternly.
“Oh please Naina! They love what you cook especially the spicy egg curry you make...”
Kiran and her lazy bum knew how to convince me but I wasn’t going to fall for this one, most of the days when Kiran had to go somewhere or if there was an emergency she always had my help and so did I when I needed a reliable friend but sometimes I had to draw a line and make her realise that she was a responsible mother and not some teenage who had all the time in the world to gossip,
I shook my head in disagreement until she understood her plea’s out of variety.
“Fine I’ll go then and leave your ass for good but we aren’t done about this whole boss thing, you will tell me all about it later alright?” I chuckled as she stared at me pointing her finger as if our lives depended on that silly never again happening event,
I purposely nodded as I led her out to the door because if I didn’t she wouldn’t leave me.
“Take care and tell the kids I’ll come to meet them soon.” I waved at her as she rushed towards her house three blocks away from mine, I then locked the door and headed upstairs to take bath,
I knew things weren’t right between us for now but still that didn’t permit me to bad mouth about my husband in anyway behind his back, I wrapped myself with a towel and headed towards the bathroom when suddenly a familiar music stopped me,
my eyes immediately darted towards the sound and found Gaurav’s phone ringing with an unknown number, I hesitated but then thinking what if it’s an important call, picked it up
“HELLO...” I stuttered but there was no voice just a faint slow breathing
“Hello.. who is it?” I asked again but still no sound like someone could hear me but still didn’t like to answer, silence from the other end was unsettling as if someone very quietly listening to me.
“Please speak...I-I can’t hear you.” I tried one last time to see if it’s a network issue.
“But I can hear you quite perfectly..Naina.” My eyes widened as I blinked a few times, my racing heart immediately recognized the foreign accent.
“Mr laviosa..” I barely whispered.
“Carlo would sound much more pleasing from your lips maybe then you wouldn’t mind my calling you, Naina.” I was confused as to how did he know that I didn’t like it.
“I-I can’t do that, Mr laviosa...I’m sorry.” I mumbled plainly and suddenly I heard him laugh.
“Don’t be Naina...I like when you’re honest with me, Well then, my offer stays.. Whenever you wish to.” Somehow I still couldn’t figure out what kind of person he was..Sometimes so mysterious and sometimes so friendly.
“Well I had called to speak with Gaurav but luckily I got to hear your voice maybe it’s a sign that says we aren’t done with each other yet.” I could imagine him smirk from the other end.
“I will inform Gaurav that you called..” I really didn’t wish to continue this conversation any further with him
“You won't have to. I'll speak to him directly once I reach office. Don’t worry.” He spoke arrogantly.
“So how are you? I was told that you didn’t feel quite alright the other day and left the party before I could even say goodbye to you.”
I felt like I should just disconnect the call, why would he ask something like that when he absolutely knows he was the reason behind it
“I’m fine, Mr. Laviosa.” I replied indifferently and there was silence for a moment from his end
“I know you don’t like me Naina...and it’s only natural after how I expressed myself to you the other day.” He then paused and I could hear his breathing intensify.
“But since then, it has been impossible for me to erase you from my thoughts." What is he saying? My heartbeat increased.
"I desire to see you again Naina and believe me I will.. And when I do, I won't let you push me away that easily. “
I immediately threw away the phone and it crashed against the wall, I tried to calm myself but it seemed useless as I stared down at my shaking hands and saw sweat all over them, I couldn’t understand what was happening..Things were moving too fast or I wasn’t moving at all,
I gulped and wiped away the sweat from my forehead then slowly reached for the phone, the back panel was off and the battery had come out except that there wasn’t any other damage to it, I breathed a sigh of relief then put it back again,
I then unwrapped myself and entered the shower, blissful hot water cleansed my body, wish I could cleanse away his voice everything about him that so adamantly now resounded within my head, It was like an echo that wouldn’t stop even if I tried to make it, The warm droplets formed steam as I stood there without moving at all, the voices banging in my head. They said the same thing, over and over again- you can’t run neither can you withstand his overwhelming self, I closed my eyes in desperation to see Gaurav as my tears merged with the sublime water but instead I saw what I never imagined I would see – the green eyed devil smirking at me
LAVIOSA MANSION
“Master Carlo, Can I comprehend the reason behind your delightful smile?” The Butler questioned as he stepped inside the spacious room with the Breakfast tray for his Master,
he then quietly began arranging the scrumptious cuisines over the fancy vintage coffee table
“Guess who received my call, Antonio?” he spoke endearingly, his eyes fixed on the phone within his grasp as the bright morning rays accentuated his shirtless masculine stature.
“Mr Nanda I suppose as you had mentioned you wished to converse with him.” He chuckled at his Butler’s reply as he handed him the phone and sat back casually over the wooden chair across the table
“What if he didn’t take his phone with him. Now guess?” He grinned as he picked up the cutlery and began slicing through prosciutto, his butler’s face turned rigid as his Master enjoyed the meal.
“Mrs. Nanda..She answered the phone, didn’t she?” his Master paused and smiled profusely.
“Not bad Antonio...Looks like you earned yourself a free day.” He then tasted his black coffee and continued with his meal.
“I thought you weren’t serious about what you said earlier?” Butler spoke up politely
“Maybe I was. What made you think I wasn’t?” he now stared at his Butler in all seriousness.
“You had too much to drink yesterday Master Carlo...those words were probably the outcome of your excessive consumption” His Master suddenly lifted his gaze and met his eyes, The Butler was amazed to see the magnitude of emotions those eyes possessed for the married woman.
“Drinks didn’t affect me the way she did Antonio. Her beauty, her scent, her innocence...Everything about her...It’s all this mind ever thinks of! Diavolo!”
He stood up suddenly disrupting the entire serving and walked over to his balcony, Butler could see the restlessness within his Master as he gripped the railing and breathed harder.
“Didn’t expect you would fall in love with a woman you can never have.” Butler said gravely as he felt sadness for his Master
“Love..” Suddenly his Master stated with a smirk.
“It kills your heart and steals your soul Antonio..” He then turned around to look at his Butler.
“If that’s what love entails then it’s true, Antonio. I’m in love with this woman.”
Butler sighed halfheartedly.
“She won’t be yours Master, she already belongs to someone else. She's married.” His master walked up to him faking or implying a smile he didn’t quite understand.
“Do you think I’m not aware of that?
It may seem unlawful to you Antonio but for me it’s a challenge that I’d like to win.”
He smiled more cheerfully now as he shook the shoulder of his baffled Butler who just stood there watching him
“Enjoy the rest of the day Antonio as we might not play this little Guessing game again.” He winked at him then walked away towards his luxurious bathroom whistling leisurely all the way while his Butler still wandered how would it be possible in such complicated circumstances..
