KYRA
After Kyra had been dolled up by the maids and she had met with Liam in his office again,it was time for dinner and everyone was seated.
From Mother Amelia, to the seers, to the shamans. All the members of the royal court.
The table span wide with chairs on each side of its rectangular shape and one chair on either end of it.
Alpha Liam was sitting in one while his mother, her highness, Mother Amelia sat in the other.
Kyra was in the chair right next to Alpha and from her view, the already long dining table was even longer.
It crossed her mind a few times what was going on back home and at the facility but she just could not bring herself to leave. So she sat still, waiting anxiously for whatever was to come.
Was this her life now?
“Son, how’s the contract with the…” mother Amelia trailed off.
“The Howlers.” Liam finished casually.
“Yes, the howlers. How’s the herb thing coming along?”
“ I and Zach are both working on it. Decisions will be made soon. A decision that’s for the best of Lupus Regalis.” Liam replied as he looked in Zach’s direction knowingly.
Mother Amelia let out a little sigh of displeasure.
“Liam, darling…” she said with a tone that suggested she would be holding Liam’s palms in hers if he wasn’t so far on the other side of the table.”… you are alpha now and as such should be making important decisions on your own.”
Kyra could sense some sort of tension between the trio. Mother Amelia did not care much for Zach’s guidance and something told Kyra everyone on that table could sense it too but kept it hush.
Nobody wanted smoke from Amelia and even Kyra had learnt this in the twenty four hours she had spent in this strange place.
The awkward silence was broken when Zach decided to speak.
“Every young Alpha needs guidance.” He started. “It has been a tradition for generations. Even Your husband_”
“Liam is mature now, he doesn't need a babysitter.” Amelia cut him off.
“Mother!” Liam snapped and Amelia's eyes widened with shock. She was not expecting that reaction from him and something told Kyra she wasn't used to people—especially liam—calling her out.
“Can we just enjoy dinner?” Liam continued.
“We would if these girls can finally bring us said dinner.” Amelia stated, scanning the room for a maid, trying to ease the tension. “Martha! Bring the dinner already!” she commanded. Her voice was loud but it wasn't a yell. Amelia still kept her regal tone.
And sure enough, after a few moments, a group of girls marched into the dining area in a different style of uniform than the girls that dolled Kyra up with cloches and dishes and cutlery.
They set the table and served dinner like it had been choreographed while everyone sitting at the table just watched it unfold.
After the girls were done with their duty, just like they had come in, they took a bow in unison and marched out of the dining area.
This sight was strange and almost comical to Kyra but she made sure not to let even a fart out because there were no curls to be found on anyone's lips. This was very normal for them so she also had to act normal.
While Kyra looked around for someone to start eating first and noticed nobody had picked up their cutlery, she also waited.
The chef walked in as the maids had left and began to announce the dishes on the table.
Kyra had never wondered what werewolves ate. But from what was sitting in front of her, their diet did not solely consist of blood and human flesh.
“Good evening. Dinner is served.
Tonight, you have venison loin sliced to medium rare and paired with wild mushrooms.
Sides include roasted root vegetables with garlic and charred broccolini with smoked sea salt.
For dessert, a chilled fig and dark cherry cake with a touch of elderflower cream.
Allergies and preferences of the family and court has been considered. Enjoy.”
With that, the chef took a bow and marched out like the maids did.
“Okay then” Liam called out. “Let’s dig in shall we?”
Liam said as he inspected everyone’s expression before picking up the cutlery himself and digging in.
“Are you really going to eat dinner without me?” A female voice called from the entrance and everyone’s necks naturally turned in that direction.
She had long dark hair and a beautiful olive skin tone. This mystery of a woman batted her full lashes as she grinned with all her teeth out, pulling her red lips side to side.
Mother Amelia, to nobody but Kyra’s suprise, got up to go welcome her.
“My pretty flower!” She said as she rushed over to join her.
“Aunty! I’ve missed you so much.” She said as she met Amelia half way as they exchanged curtsy kisses.
Kyra couldn’t help but notice Liam’s lips were pulled up into a smile and his eyes glittered too. Who was this woman and why did she light up the room so much?
“Seraphina!” Liam said as he got up to welcome her too.
“Fuckface!” Seraphina said playfully as she turned her attention from Amelia to Liam. “Ouuu…” she went on as she inspected Liam. “ You've finally added some flesh to your bones. Love the growth.”
“And you’ve still not gotten a sense of humor. Those trips all over the world didn’t help?” He replied.
“ Remember when I chipped your tooth as a little cub and you cried to aunty. It’s nice to see you finally got that filled.”
There was a silence in the air before the both of them and everyone else laughed. They both exchanged some sort of complicated handshake before sharing a hug.
And as Kyra watched, her blood boiled. She stared into her soul like she could burrow into her skull.
No one had ever made her feel so… so jealous. Something inside her was boiling like it was fighting to escape and show this brunette what happens when you mess with what belonged to Kyra.
But amidst Kyra’s evil thoughts, Seraphina’s eyes met hers over Liam’s shoulders. That hug had lingered for way too long in Kyra’s opinion.
Just one look into her eyes and Kyra could sense she was no good.
Seraphina’s thin brows furrowed at Kyra and she finally broke the hug with Liam.
“Oh hi there .”Seraphina said with a curious smile and looked to Liam for an introduction.
“Oh, Seraphina. This is Kyra.” Liam answered.
“Oh hi, Kyra. You have a lovely name. Are you Liam's distant cousin?” Seraphina asked and Kyra could sense a bit of condescension in her tone. She knew Kyra was not a distant cousin.
“Actually, Sera, this is_” Liam started but was cut off by Kyra.
She refused to be spoken for. Kyra had dealt with nice girl bullies like her in high school and she was not about to become a background character that would cave in to bullies again.
“Hi there… What's your name again?” Kyra asked
“Seraphina.” She said, her smile as wide as it had been before.
“Hi there, Seraphina. I’m Kyra.” Kyra stated as she too formed a wide smile and stretched out her hands for a handshake. “Liam’s Mate.”
Seraphina’s smile dropped and Kyra knew she had struck a nerve and marked her territory.
