CHAPTER4

1255 Words
ZACH Zach remembered watching Liam run around the clan grounds as a little cub. He always seemed to be up to some sort of mischief. But now Zach watched as little Liam, now Alpha Liam, hunched over the office desk, and took care of important administrative matters of the clan. He had grown up to be quite the golden boy and Zach was proud he took part in raising him to be the fine gentleman he was. “The contract will take some time to take full effect, Alpha. It will take even longer to see its effect on the clan.” Zach, the clan's ex beta and now Liam's special adviser, declared. Liam and Zach had been stuck in the office the entire day. He had heard that Liam had brought in a girl and had refused to address much about it to the rest of the clan. This news would not usually have potential to cause a ruckus but the girl was a … girl. A human girl. Amelia would rather die than have a mixed breed as an heir. “I respect and trust your decision, Zach. I'll hold on signing the contract for now.” Another clan wanted to form a trade alliance with the dynasty. They were a more agricultural pack and they wanted to trade food and medicinal herbs for security. The food wasn’t a necessity, no member of the Lupus Regalis ever slept on a hungry stomach. The medicine however was quite the need. The cubs have been coming down with a flu very recently and the shamans say the herbs they need grew up north with the Moonfields. Every young alpha needed a wise elder to put him through the sea of legalities that came with the title of Alpha and Liam had Zach. Not only was he the ex Beta and the second in command during his father's reign as alpha but he was also the father to his best friend, Peter. It just made sense that the future Alpha and his Beta would be best friends. Their friendship had been established even before they were born. As Liam sorted through some documents, Zach caught an expression on Liam’s face. It was a look of yearning and he knew exactly who it was for. He wanted to see her face, he wanted to hear her voice and feel the skin of her hands again. Zach caught himself asking the question; ‘ how could a human girl make an alpha’s tail wag like so?’ And suddenly, Liam’s head swung up. He was looking at something or someone of interest. So this was the girl that had the alpha’s wolf running around like a little pup. But something was off, there was a scent in the air as she stood there. She was part wolf and part something else that Zach struggled to make out with his nose. It felt shielded , blocked out. It was something but strangely smelled like nothing. Liam raised his head out of the pile of documents and there she was, standing in front of him. He couldn't help but to stand up. Kyra had her curly brown hair curled and let loose. She had a flowy gown similar to Amelia's but less evil queen and more princess locked away in a tower. Their eyes finally met and Kyra let a weak smile escape her lips as she held on to her pendant nervously. How could they click so quickly? It was very evident from her pale skin and the pinkish tint on it that he made her flustered. If Liam’s skin wasn’t so tan, Zach could have made out a blush as well. Were they fated…? “You're insanely beautiful, Kyra.” Zach had never heard those words come out of Liam’s mouth before to any of the females in the pack. Maybe the usual flattery of his mother, Amelia. But he’d never say it like that. “I had better head out then. Call me, Alpha, if you need any more assistance.” Zach announced as he made his way towards the door to give them both some privacy. The atmosphere was becoming very much intimate for the both of them and Zach being in that room with them both would have been uncomfortable for everyone . But before Zach could leave, his eyes caught a reflection of light around Kyra's neck. It was a split second when he saw it— her pendant, a crescent moon made with silver. It looked very familiar. Humans wore anything though, without fully understanding its meaning as long as it made them look cool or hip. Zach didn’t want to believe Kyra, whom Liam was infatuated by, was so shallow as to wear something just to look cool. Infatuation was too disrespectful to describe the glimmer in Liam’s eyes when he saw her. It seemed the alpha was in love. Zach remembered the first and only time he was ever in love. No, it wasn’t to Peter’s mother even though she made the best mate and the sweetest mother before her passing. It was to a witch. It was , and still is, forbidden for wolves to have affiliations to vampires and this extended to witches as well. As easy as it was to just assume that these three creatures of mystic were just being discriminatory , that was not the case at all. Zach’s father was told the story of the Great War when he was younger and how the werewolf race had suffered g******e from vampires with the help of none other than witches. It wasn’t a tale by moonlight, it was an actual mystical historical event that shook the werewolf kingdom. So it made sense to want to hide the fact that you were in love with a witch while you were a full blooded wolf from the biggest pack in the kingdom. They both promised to run away to somewhere far from home and start their family but two teens had lots of dreams that couldn’t become reality. Zach had to marry well if he was going to be beta like Peter’s grandfather and his father before him. It was unheard of that a Beta would marry a witch. And so their paths never crossed again. Zach had always wondered what became of her. Did she get married too or was she so consumed by the grief he had given her that she just couldn’t find love again. It was a different type of grief that became more bearable as the years passed. Having to mourn someone who you weren’t sure was alive or dead, happy or sad. Zach would wonder sometimes what his life could have been like if he had just run away with Calista Warfern that night and started a new family like they had both promised each other. But then duty outweighed every other silly little teenage dream he had. The weight of being Beta to the pack had crushed all his hopes of being with his one true love. He lived a seemingly fulfilling life and he was grateful for it but as he took a last look into the room he had just walked out of and saw Kyra and Liam, he felt hope that he could finally live his love through theirs. But there was still this weight on his mind. It was ominous. Zach hated to be a pessimist but he could feel their love story wouldn’t be any easier than his.
