William “Babe,” my wife called out from the bathroom. “Can you help me get my blow dryer? It’s on the counter.” Instantly, I found it. I felt my eyebrows twitch. “Go get it yourself,” I said out loud while mumbling under my breath, “Fat bitch.” Even though she wasn’t fat, it always slipped out every time I was pissed—or rather, nervous. She came out ten minutes later, her hair hanging in clumps all the way down to her shoulders. “What’s got you so riled up this morning?” she asked, picking up the blow dryer from her vanity and then walking back into the bathroom.
