I meant to pick up the phone. “Sir, are you there?” Her voice had been calling out from the other end. “Sir?”
“I'm here,” I said, bringing the phone closer to my ear. “What did he say?”
“He said to call him. Very good, mister. He said he was interested in talking to you but that, because you weren't in, you should give him a quick call once I let you know.”
I hadn't even said goodbye, I just hung up the phone, placing a hand on the wheel and exhaling slowly, pulling in as much breath as possible before letting it out.
