CHAPTER 5

1341 Words
Michelle's POV “Michelle!” Mr Williams called out with a startled expression the moment I walked into his office. “You looked shocked, were you not expecting me here?” I asked nonchalantly as I sat down before him. He tried his best to compose himself but his first reaction couldn't slip off under my watch. “I wasn't shocked! I was surprised” he said as he adjusted his glasses. “Surprised, why?” I asked and he cleared his throat. “You are early today, why? How is everything going?” He asked and I smiled. “Yes, all is well, I don't know what I did to some set of people but my house was trashed yesterday and also my car, so I slept in a hotel very close to the office, hence the reason I am here earlier than usual!” I narrated and he gave me a surprised look. “Your house was trashed?” He asked, and I nodded, expecting to see if he knew about it, but his expression was so neutral. “This is the work of Bruce and his men. He is one heartless man and I knew his case would be dangerous!” He said and I looked at him with a smile. “But you gave that dangerous work to me!” I replied and he cleared his throat. “No, it's not like that! I wanted to help you level up. You have always been dedicated and hard-working, and it is only right if you have a bigger fish on your plate, considering the benefits. I didn't consider the danger, I am so sorry. I only thought of it after yesterday's encounter with him.” He said as I stood up and smiled. “Today might be the last time you are seeing him!” He suddenly said as he stood up and walked towards the door. “Why?” I asked and he handed me another airpod since yesterday's one was smashed. “You will be paid for the job in full, and we will see to your trashed house and car, but for your safety, we have given the job to another person,” he said, and I was shocked. I wanted to disagree but a part of me was fed up with the struggle and problems I have faced in just two days. I walked straight to the cell, and the guards opened up immediately, and I walked right in. Unlike before, Bruce was calmly sitting in his seat, so elegantly like a boss. I went to my seat, but I stopped just when I was about to pull out of the seat, and for the first two seconds, I was confused. “Bruce, what is this to you?” I asked as I tapped on the seat. “A game!” He answered, and I looked into his eyes; he was quite honest. “This is nothing but a game and a vacation! And also a trap. This means different things based on the person talking. Hope he told you, I will be leaving today?” He added and my eyes dropped. “Leaving!” I exclaimed and he laughed and stood up. “I thought you, little birdie, you still don't understand how things work right here. I hid here to trap some people, and successfully, they fell into the trap. I was expecting this therapy to be done by Marcus Brown, so he could reap what he sow, but he was so smart to reject the offer, and they found you. An innocent soul to do this, and I was so sorry; I didn't want you to lose your life until you understood what this is all about! You have too much faith in the system. And it is not what you think it is!” He said, and the cell door suddenly opened, and one of the guards walked in towards Bruce and unlocked the handcuffs in his hands. “What! What are you doing?” I questioned with shock and fear. “He is one of my subordinates! And like I said, I am leaving; I'm going home but not alone; I am going with you!” He said and walked towards me. I tried to walk backward, but my eyes were not so fast, and he caught up with me. “If I let you leave on your own, you will die and you won't understand what I want you to understand! I want to see your face when you understand that the system you see is not what it is! And I won't let you die because only me, Bruce Lashley, can be the death of Michelle Oliver!” He declared as he held my hand. “Please! Please!” I begged but seeing he was not going to change his mind, I turned to the door and screamed at the top of my voice. “Help, somebody, Help!!!” I screamed for help, but suddenly, everything went black in the next seconds. Is this death?? Is this how fast it is?? ***** “Daddy, is she going to wake up soon? I want to show her my princess room and all my dolls and my charming prince!” A little charming voice filled my ears and I wondered who had that amazing voice. Am I in heaven already? I slowly opened my eyes and adjusted my sight to the room as I found out I was in an unfamiliar place. I hurriedly sat up and was still looking around when I felt a lightweight on my leg. “She is awake!” I looked down to see a beautiful girl climbing on the bed towards me. “Hello!” I said slowly, as I didn't want to startle the young girl, but where am I? “Yes, she is!” The familiar voice in my nightmare spoke up and I looked up to see him standing by the door frame. “Bruce!!” I exclaimed while the girl finally hugged me. “Daddy, she knows you and she doesn't know me!” The young girl in my embrace said and I was shocked and pulled her away and looked at her face. “Daddy? Bruce is your father?” I questioned and she nodded childishly. “Yes, that is my daddy!” This monster has a child! Bruce Lashley is a married man!! Just immediately an aged woman joined us. “Esmeralda,” Bruce called out to his little daughter. “Why don't you help grandma bring her glasses from her room? “Okay, Dad.” The little girl ran off excitedly. "And who is this beautiful damsel?" She questioned, dropping the wood to the floor. "Meet Michelle; she will be staying with us for some time," Bruce replied, leaving my back and coming to my side. Esmeralda has dropped off my body and returned to her grandmother. "Your new wife?" She asked, staring at me and making me nervous. "No mama, she is here to spend time with us." "You should start looking for a new wife. You can't be stuck up in the memory of Josephine forever." I looked at Bruce to see his face had become dark with rage. I assume Josephine to be the mother of Esmeralda, judging from his reaction. "Please let's not bring this up in front of our guest." He suggested. “All right, I'll be in my room. I don't know what is taking Esmeralda so long.” The woman said and smiled at me before leaving. Did she know her son was a criminal? I finally asked Bruce the question I've been dying to ask. “Are you using me as bait for your business?" I asked. "More than that darling." He got up from the chair and walked towards me. I was cautious of his every movement as he gently sat down on the table next to me. "My former wife was murdered in cold blo*d.”
