ADRIAN’S POV The bedroom was quiet in the way that rooms between two people who had run out of things to say to each other always were. Elena was on her side of the bed with her laptop open, the blue light catching the angles of her face. She had been working since we got back from dinner. Or she was pretending to work. I had stopped being able to tell the difference. I was on my side doing the same thing. We had been married for three weeks and we had already perfected the art of being in the same room without being in the same room. Two people occupying a shared space with the practiced efficiency of strangers on a long flight. I closed my laptop eventually. Stared at the ceiling for a while.
