Chapter 9: Shadows on the Horizon

244 Words
The forest around their cabin was alive with whispers, the wind threading through ancient trees like a warning. Aria stood at the window, her breath fogging the glass as she stared into the swirling shadows beyond. Calen sat cross-legged on the floor, sketching wolves and stars on a scrap of bark, but his golden eyes kept darting toward the window. His young wolf stirred beneath his skin, restless and alert. Lucien moved quietly behind Aria, his presence a solid anchor in the small room. “They won’t wait for us to be ready,” he said, voice low but firm. “The rogues have grown bolder. They’re hunting, not just for food — but for something else. Someone.” Aria’s fingers clenched at the window frame. “Calen’s shifting early. His wolf is strong, but he’s still a child. The bond… it’s raw. Unstable. If they find him before we’re prepared…” Lucien knelt beside Calen, meeting the boy’s gaze with silver eyes burning with fierce determination. “Your strength is a gift, Calen. But it’s also a target. You must learn when to fight — and when to run.” Calen’s voice was steady, but Aria caught the flicker of uncertainty behind his eyes. “I’m ready.” The weight of that simple declaration settled over them like a storm cloud. Outside, the wind carried distant howls — the rogues were coming. Aria swallowed hard. The storm wasn’t just in the sky anymore.
