Chapter 5: The Hunter’s Return

265 Words
The night was thick with rain, each drop pounding like a heartbeat against the dark leaves. Aria crouched low by the riverbank, her senses sharpened to every sound—the rush of water, the rustle of fur, the faintest whisper of footsteps. Behind her, Calen’s breathing was steady, but she could feel the tension coiling inside him like a spring ready to snap. “They’re close,” she murmured, voice low but urgent. Calen’s golden eyes flicked to hers, wide but fierce. Aria tightened her grip on the wooden spear in her hands. Years of survival had taught her that no matter how deep you bury your past, it always claws its way back. And tonight, it was hunting. Suddenly, from the shadows, a dark figure emerged. Tall, lean—but unmistakably strong. “Alpha Thorne,” Aria said, the words tasting bitter in her mouth. Lucien stepped forward, rain dripping from his jet-black hair, eyes glowing faintly silver in the stormlight. “I’m not here to fight,” he said. “Not yet.” Aria’s wolf snarled in her mind. But her eyes never left his. “Why now?” she asked. “After all this time… why come back?” Lucien’s gaze softened, though his voice remained rough. “Because the bond never died. And because our son needs me.” Calen looked up, confusion mixing with hope. For the first time, Aria saw the weight in Lucien’s expression—the years of regret, the fierce determination. But there was still a gulf between them, as wide and dark as the storm above.
