The darkness and a thick fog made it impossible to see more than a few metres ahead, adding to their apprehension. They had not gone far before they heard the sound of an approaching vehicle. Since the only verge was on the far side, the fugitives quickly crossed over. No sooner had they moved safely off the roadway, than two headlight beams appeared behind them. There was a screech of severely applied brakes and a pickup truck drew level, then swerved across the road and came to a standstill on the grass verge.
