Lilian stepped forward and walked directly to Aubrey, helping her up and analyzing her bracelets. “These are constraining bracelets from the Eastern lands, Elias. You knew that your slave was a witch and you held her captive nevertheless!”
“This is outrageous!” the High Priest shouted, “Elias, explain yourself!”
“I didn't know she was a witch! I bought those bracelets because they told me that would keep her inside the vampire territory, just an insurance.”
“You’re LYING!” Donovan growled, grabbing Elias by the bow tie.
“Aubrey…” Lilian spoke sweetly to her “did you know you were a witch?” Aubrey shakes her head no. “How long have you had these?”
Aubrey gulped slowly before speaking up. “Since I was sixteen.”
“Sixteen… the age that witches start showing their powers. What a coincidence, right Elias?” Lilian glared at him.
“I put them on because she kept escaping, I didn’t know she was a witch!”
“The woman that loves you? Why would she try to escape?” Lilian said mockingly. Before Elias could come up with another lie, Lilian spoke in an official manner. “I, Lilian Device acuse Elias Ghica of breaking our Peace Treaty and request the High Priest for a trial.”
“This got to be a joke” Elias said with a chuckle but fear was evident in his eyes.
“I’m sorry, Elias. But as High Priest of the Western Lands I cannot let this evidence pass. You will have to go through trial. You’re allowed to stay within your domains while the day arrives.”
Elias closed his eyes for a second and when he opened them he was calm and elegant as always. Detaching himself from Donovan’s grasp he fixed his tuxedo and addressed the High Priest. “It would be crazy to go against your orders, your Highness. I’m sure that after the trial it will be clear that everything is a misunderstanding.”
“That is a wise decision, Elias.” the High Priest nodded to someone behind him and a guard with matching colors to the priest’s garments walked towards Elias, putting something in his wrist. A thick metal bracelet was now in his left hand. “Hope you don’t find this very ironic, Elias. You will have to wear this to ensure you don’t leave your house.”
“I understand, High Priest. Better safe than sorry, right?” he said bitterly.
“In the meantime” Blackwell looked back at Aubrey “I believe the safest option would be…”
“If I might intervene, your Highness” Lilian interrupted, making Blackwell look strangely at her. He was not used to people interrupting him. “While all this gets settled, I believe it is best if Aubrey stays with me. As we mentioned, she’s a witch, it should be my duty to protect her and give her the knowledge of her people that has been deprived from her all these years.”
“But she’s MY MATE!” Donovan said stepping forward.
“And she will keep being your mate, Donovan, I’m not trying to keep you away from her. I’m just suggesting that she first learns about her people before she becomes the Luna of another race.” Lilian explained patiently without looking away from the High Priest that seemed to be analyzing the situation. “I request to have Aubrey as my apprentice, Donovan can visit her whenever she wants and once everything else is settled; Aubrey will be free to decide where she wants to stay.”
“Well, Aubrey, aren’t you a popular girl tonight?” Blackwell said obviously amused and with a mischievous sparkle in his eyes. “I’ll allow it. Aubrey will join the Foresta Witch Coven for the time being and that’s my final word. Now, let’s enjoy the rest of the evening. Shall we?” and on cue, the DJ played the music again and people started walking towards the ballroom again as if nothing had happened.
Just Lilian, Donovan, Elias, Aubrey and some other curious eyes were still in the main entrance. “Take these off, Elias!” Lilian ordered, pointing at Aubrey’s bracelets that were still burning.
“I don’t know how,” he said, shrugging it off.
“I know you do, only the person that put the bracelets on can take them off so do it!”
Elias walked slowly towards Aubrey, by mere instinct Aubrey backed away until her feet touched the beginning of the stairs. Elias grabbed her wrists and unclasped her bracelets. Getting his face closer to her he whispered softly, “if you leave, I’ll do to Babydoll everything I used to do to you.” Aubrey looked directly to his eyes in disbelief. He walked away from her, letting her sink in the information.
“Are you ready to leave, sweetheart? I’ll wait here for you to pack your things.” Lilian said in a motherly tone.
“I… I can’t leave…”
“What?” Lilian and Donovan said at the same time. Elias stopped dead in his track with his back towards her.
“I can’t leave her” Aubrey said nodding towards Summer that was still staring behind a pillar.
“Oh, sweetheart. Is she your friend? I’m sorry but… if she’s human... there’s nothing we can do about her.”
“I won’t leave without her!” Aubrey started panicking. No one deserves to be treated the way she has been treated. She would rather stay and keep being Master Elias pet than letting another poor girl go through that.
“How much for your servant, Elias?” Donovan understood the situation immediately.
“Excuse me, Donovan?” Elias said playing dumb.
“You heard me, how much to buy that servant over there?”
“Babydoll? Oh, no I couldn’t! She’s not for sale. Haven’t you taken enough from me already?” he said, pretending to be hurt.
Summer ran to Aubrey and hugged her tightly, whispering to her ear “Don’t you dare stay for me! Don’t you f*****g dare!”.
“I can’t leave you, I can’t let you go through the same…” Aubrey whispered back.
“Remember what I told you? We always have a choice. Now you have the choice to leave. Please, take it. Don’t let it go away. Choose to be free, Aubrey.”
“Aubrey?” Lilian spoke again, “I think it will be best if we leave now.”
Aubrey stared at Summer intently, knowing she was right. She wiped her tears and gave Summer a final hug, “I’ll come back for you, I promise.” Summer nodded against her body and let her go.
“We’ll wait here for you to pack your things.”
“Actually… this is all I have.” Aubrey said pointing at her outfit.
“Oh...oh, ok. Then. There’s no need to wait. Come here, darling.” Lilian grabbed her softly by the shoulders and guided her to the exit. “Elias, thanks for throwing this splendorous party. Dimitri was right, you certainly know how to give quite a show!” she said without turning around. Donovan with his Beta and Gamma followed close behind.
