After dinner, Talon was helping me load the dishwasher when his phone started buzzing on the counter. I checked the screen, handing it to him. “It’s Jake.” Talon’s expression shifted, the warmth in his eyes dimming as he took the phone from my hand. He glanced at me briefly before answering, his voice low and guarded. “Jake.” I watched him closely, my stomach knotting as I tried to read his face.
