The Queen’s Dressing

1743 Words
The cold morning light poured through the arched glass window of Kaelen’s chamber, cutting through the heavy red curtains and scattering pale golden shafts across the stone floor. I woke up with my heart hammering against my ribs, every nerve ending in my body singing with a wild, hyper-aware electricity. The space beside me on the massive fur-covered bed was empty, but the sheets were still warm, saturated with Kaelen’s intoxicating scent—cedar, ozone, and pure, unfiltered dominance. For the first time in three years, the dark, stifling suffocations of Victor’s packhouse felt millions of miles away. But in their place was a whole new kind of danger. I wasn't just a runaway she-wolf hiding her true nature anymore. By nightfall, I was going to be presented to the fiercest, most ruthless pack in the northern territories as the mate of Alpha Kaelen. My inner wolf stirred beneath my sternum, stretching her claws, letting out a satisfied, low rumble that sent a tremor straight down my spine. She wasn't terrified anymore. She was hungry. A quiet knock echoed against the heavy oak doors before they creaked open. An older she-wolf stepped into the room, carrying a heavy silver tray laden with steam-cooked meats, fresh fruit, and a folded garment made of dark crimson silk and supple black leather. Her eyes were sharp, gray like winter frost, and her posture radiated the hardened grace of a retired pack warrior. "Good morning, my lady," the woman said, her voice like grinding stones, though her bow was deep and respectful. "I am Greta. Alpha Kaelen ordered me to assist you in preparing for the Great Assembly." I pulled the thick fur blanket higher up on my chest, my gaze narrowing as I studied her. "He ordered you?" A faint, knowing smile flickered across Greta’s weathered lips. "The Alpha orders everyone, child. But when it comes to you, he gave instructions that if a single hair on your head were pulled during dressing, the tailor would lose his fingers. He has locked the border patrols himself and will return shortly." She set the tray on the dark wooden table by the hearth and uncurled the outfit onto the bed. It wasn't the delicate, restrictive dresses Victor had forced me to wear to look like a fragile trophy. This was armor. Deep crimson silk fitted for flexibility, layered over with fine leather pauldrons carved with the silver sigil of the Bloodmoon Pack—a howling wolf encircled by a crescent moon. "He wants the pack to see a queen," Greta murmured, her gray eyes locking onto mine with fierce intensity. "Not a victim. Not a prize. The Bloodmoon wolves do not respect weakness. If you walk into that hall looking like prey, they will challenge you before sunset." "I am not prey," I said, the words spilling from my lips with a quiet, lethal certainty that surprised even me. "Good," Greta replied, stepping back. "Then bathe, dress, and put on your armor. Because today, the elders test your blood." An hour later, I stood before the tall silver mirror in Kaelen’s private dressing alcove. The crimson silk clung to my curves like liquid fire, while the structured leather cinched my waist, accentuating the lean strength I had hidden for years. My dark hair was swept back into intricate warrior braids woven with thin silver thread, exposing the long, pale line of my throat. I looked dangerous. I looked lethal. The heavy oak doors clicked open, and the temperature in the room instantly spiked. I turned around slowly as Kaelen stepped across the threshold. He was dressed in full Alpha regalia—a high-collared black tunic reinforced with dark steel scales, a heavy bear-fur cloak draped over his broad shoulders, and two silver-hilted daggers strapped to his thighs. He looked like a god of war carved straight from the mountain rock. The moment his eyes landed on me, he stopped dead in his tracks. The air between us charged so fast my breath hitched. His amber eyes flared into a violent, burning gold, his nostrils flaring as he took in the sight of me wearing his pack's mark. His chest rose and fell in a heavy, ragged surge, the pure, feral hunger in his gaze making my pulse shoot straight to the ceiling. In two long, predatory strides, he closed the distance between us. He didn't say a word. His large, warm hand cupped the side of my neck, his thumb tracing the wildly fluttering pulse at my throat before sliding up into the hair at the nape of my neck. "You look..." Kaelen’s voice was a rough, gravelly rasp that vibrated directly against my collarbone. "You look like you could burn this entire mountain to ashes." "Would you stop me if I did?" I whispered, leaning into his touch despite myself, my hands coming up to press against the cold steel plate covering his massive chest. "I'd hand you the torch," he growled low, his head dipping down until his lips brushed the ultrasensitive skin right behind my ear. A sharp, delicious shock of heat bolted through my veins, making my knees buckle slightly. He caught me instantly, his arm wrapping around my waist like a steel band, hauling me flush against his hard body. My breath hitched as his lips tracked down the curve of my neck, nipping lightly at the sweet spot where a mate’s mark should be. "Kaelen..." I gasped, my fingers digging into his leather armor. "The hall is full," Kaelen murmured against my skin, his voice thick with a dark, possessive heat that made my core ache. "Three hundred warriors. Eight elders. All waiting to see who brought the mighty Bloodmoon Alpha to his knees." He pulled back just enough to look me in the eyes, his golden gaze burning into my soul with an absolute, terrifying certainty. "Walk at my side," Kaelen commanded softly. "Hold your head high. Let them smell the wild fire in your blood. If anyone dares to question your right to stand beside me, I will tear their throat out before they can finish the sentence." "I don't need you to fight my battles, Alpha," I said, a dangerous, thrilling smile touching my lips as my inner wolf bared her teeth. Kaelen’s dark chuckle rumbled through his chest, a sound of pure, intoxicated pride. "I know, my queen. That's what terrifies me most." He extended his arm to me, his fingers laced with heavy silver rings. I took his hand, our palms sliding together—a collision of fire and ice—and together, we turned toward the grand corridor leading down into the dark heart of the Shadow Keep. The Great Hall was a cavernous amphitheater of dark granite, illuminated by roaring bonfires suspended in massive iron braziers high above the stone floor. The noise inside was deafening—a chaotic roar of hundreds of shifting wolves, clinking ale horns, and deep, vibrating chatter. The air was thick with the scent of roasted meat, pine resin, and the heavy, metallic tang of unrefined alpha power. Then, the massive double doors at the head of the hall swung wide open. "ALL HAIL ALPHA KAELEN!" a herald shouted, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. The entire hall fell into a sudden, dead silence so absolute you could hear the crackle of the nearest torch. Three hundred heads snapped toward the doorway. Hundreds of pair of glowing, predatory eyes locked onto us as Kaelen stepped onto the raised stone dais. But they weren't just looking at him. Every single gaze tracked down to his right side, where my fingers were locked firmly in his. Whispers broke out like wildfire through the crowd. "A stranger?" "Look at her scent... she's suppressing her wolf!" "She wears the crimson silk of the Luna!" Kaelen paid no attention to the murmurs. He marched down the center aisle with absolute, terrifying authority, dragging the atmosphere of the room behind him like a heavy iron chain. I kept my head high, my spine straight as steel, letting my eyes rake over the sea of hardened warriors and suspicious pack elders. We reached the high throne carved from solid black obsidian at the head of the hall. Kaelen stopped, turning to face his people, pulling me up onto the top step beside him. "Members of the Bloodmoon Pack!" Kaelen’s voice boomed across the vast stone chamber, carrying the immense, crushing weight of full Alpha command. Weak-willed wolves in the lower rows immediately dropped their heads, submitting to the sheer force of his tone. "The rumors you have heard are true. The border was breached last night." A murmur of anger rippled through the front ranks of warriors. "An escaped wolf entered our territory, hunted by the hounds of the Eastern Pack," Kaelen continued, his grip tightening around my hand, radiating a wave of protective heat that wrapped around me like a shield. "Victor believes he can claim what passes through my woods. He believes he can demand her return." Kaelen paused, his eyes sweeping over the crowd like a sharp blade. "He is wrong," Kaelen roared. "She is not prey! She is not a runaway! She is the true mate chosen by the moon, and she will rule this pack at my side!" A breathless silence descended over the hall. For three seconds, no one dared to breathe. Then, a tall, battle-scarred elder with silver-streaked fur stepped forward from the council circle, his dark eyes locking onto me with cold, ruthless skepticism. He carried a heavy iron staff, banging it twice against the stone floor. "An Alpha may claim a mate, Kaelen," Elder Vane growled, his voice echoing with ancient authority. "But the Bloodmoon Pack does not accept a Queen based on scent alone! If she claims a throne on this mountain, she must prove her blood in the Trial of Ash!" Before Kaelen could unleash a lethal growl, a deafening explosion shattered the high stained-glass windows at the back of the hall. Screams echoed through the room as heavy iron grappling hooks slammed into the stone ledges, trailing thick, black smoke that smelled of sulfur and wolfsbane. The front gates of the courtyard shuddered under a massive, battering ram, followed by the terrifying, familiar baying of Victor's elite shadow hounds. "ATTACK!" a guard shrieked from the balcony, his throat instantly cut by a black-feathered crossbow bolt. The Great Hall erupted into total, bloody chaos.
