The air in the Great Hall fractured into a million shards of glass and screaming chaos.
Thick, purple-black smoke billowed through the shattered stained-glass windows, carrying the sickening, metallic reek of wolfsbane and charred timber. Across the cavernous room, the heavy oak reinforcement of the northern doors splintered inward with a thunderous crash. The baying of Victor’s elite shadow hounds echoed off the stone walls—a bloodthirsty chorus that made the blood run cold in my veins.
"They found us," the words barely formed on my tongue before Kaelen moved.
In a fraction of a second, the calm, regal Alpha vanished, replaced by an apex predator possessed by absolute, unadulterated wrath. His jaw clamped shut, a low, tectonic growl vibrating so violently through his chest that it rattled the silver daggers at his belt.
"Stay behind the throne," Kaelen commanded, his voice a lethal, low snarl that brooked no argument.
"Like hell I will!" I snapped back, my adrenaline surging past the point of fear into a blinding, white-hot fury. My inner wolf roared to life, scratching at my ribs, desperate to claw her way out of the cage of my chest. I ripped the silver-hilted dagger free from the holster at my thigh, the heavy steel biting reassuringly into my palm. "I've spent years running from Victor. I am done hiding!"
Kaelen’s amber eyes flared with a wild, burning mixture of possessive fury and intoxicating pride. He didn't waste time arguing. He grabbed the back of my neck, pulling me in for a crushing, bruising kiss that tasted of iron and impending slaughter.
"Show them what happens when they hunt my mate," he growled against my lips before launching himself off the dais.
The battle exploded around us.
Shadow Pack warriors poured through the broken windows and smashed doorways, clad in pitch-black armor, their eyes glowing with malicious intent. But they had walked straight into a slaughterhouse. Kaelen hit the vanguard like a falling meteor, his massive frame shifting halfway—claws lengthening, muscles tearing through his tunic—as he tore the head off the first attacker with a spray of hot, dark blood.
Shouts, screams, and the sickening crunch of breaking bone filled the hall.
Before I could even blink, a massive, scarred warrior from Victor’s vanguard lunged out of the smoke toward the dais, a rusted broadsword raised high to strike me down.
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird, a wild rhythm racing at a hundred miles an hour. Every nerve ending caught fire. I didn't hesitate. Ducking under his clumsy swing, I drove my boot hard into his knee joint, sending a sickening crack echoing through the air as he buckled. Before he could recover, I leaped onto the low stone step, driving my dagger downward with every ounce of my suppressed, furious strength straight through his leather shoulder guard.
The man gasped, dropping his sword as he collapsed into a heap at my feet.
I stood panting over him, my chest heaving, the blood pulsing in my ears like a war drum. My inner wolf threw her head back and howled in triumph. I wasn't the terrified girl running through the briars anymore. I was a fighter carved out of ash and moonlight.
"Well struck, little wolf," a deep, venomous voice hissed from the shadows near the burning hearth.
My head snapped up.
Emerging from the thickest coils of sulfurous smoke was Alpha Victor himself. He looked taller than I remembered, his eyes dead and cruel, his lips curled into a sickening, possessive smile that made my stomach violently churn. He wore heavy iron gauntlets, and behind him stood three massive, drooling shadow hounds straining against heavy silver chains.
"Did you really think a few mountain mutts could protect you from me?" Victor sneered, taking a slow, predatory step toward the dais. "You belong to my pack. You are my property. And I am going to skin this pathetic Bloodmoon Alpha alive before I drag you back home in chains."
Across the hall, knee-deep in a pile of defeated enemies, Kaelen’s head whipped around. The moment his golden eyes locked onto Victor standing near me, his entire body went deathly still.
The temperature in the Great Hall plummeted so fast frost formed instantly along the stone floor. The absolute, crushing weight of a true Alpha's dominance rolled off Kaelen in a tidal wave, forcing half of Victor’s remaining men to drop instantly to their knees, gasping for air.
Kaelen didn't walk. He tore across the room, leaving a blur of shattered stone and flying debris in his wake.
"You want her?" Kaelen’s voice was a low, subterranean rumble that promised a slow, agonizing death. "Come and take her."
Victor’s smirk faltered for a fraction of a second as the massive, terrifying form of the Bloodmoon Alpha closed the distance like a freight train. But Victor recovered fast, drawing a massive, jagged-edged broadsword that gleamed with poison along the blade.
"Kill them both!" Victor roared, loosing the hounds.
The massive beasts surged forward, teeth bared, saliva flying from their jaws as they sprinted straight toward the dais where I stood.
My heart slammed against my ribs, a wild, deafening rhythm. The fire in my veins reached a boiling point. I raised my dagger, locked my eyes on the lead beast leaping through the air, and let out a raw, feral howl that shook the very foundations of the mountain.
