The heavy oak doors clicked shut, locking in the suffocating heat of the chamber and leaving me alone with the wild, deafening drumbeat of my own heart.
I sat up slowly, dragging my trembling fingers through my tangled hair. My skin still burned everywhere Kaelen had touched me, a phantom fire humming right beneath my surface. Every instinct I had spent a lifetime cultivating—hide, run, survive, trust no one—was screaming at me to tear open the window and leap into the dark forest below.
To run away from the mountain. To run away from him.
Instead, I slid off the edge of the plush bed, my bare feet sinking into the thick fur rugs. I crossed the vast, stone-walled room, my steps tentative, until I reached the tall, arched window overlooking the courtyard below.
The sight outside stopped my breath cold.
Torches lined the massive stone battlements, casting long, flickering arcs of orange light over an army of towering, heavy-furred wolves and warriors in obsidian armor. They weren't panicking. They weren't cowering in fear. They moved with the terrifying, synchronized precision of a pack preparing for a bloodbath, their low, rumbling howls echoing off the sheer mountain cliffs like rolling thunder.
They were ready to burn the world down for me.
"Thinking of a midnight exit, little wolf?"
A low, deep voice cut through the shadows of the doorway, making every hair on my arms stand straight up.
I whipped around. Kaelen stood leaning against the stone archway, his dark cloak discarded, his chest bare and carved like marble under the faint moonlight. A jagged, faded battle scar ran diagonally across his left ribcage, accentuating the raw, lethal power radiating from his frame. But it was his eyes—heavy-lidded, dark with an unspoken hunger—that pinned me to the spot.
"I don't run from cages just to walk into a fortress," I shot back, lifting my chin, refusing to let him see how badly my knees were shaking. "You act like an army coming for me is a game. Victor isn't just some petty alpha. He plays dirty. He uses poison, traps, and fear."
Kaelen pushed off the archway, closing the distance between us with terrifying speed. Before I could blink, his large hands clamped onto my waist, lifting me effortlessly and pressing me flush against the cold stone of the window frame.
The breath rushed out of my lungs in a sharp gasp.
"Let him bring his poisons and his traps," Kaelen growled, his face inches from mine, his voice dropping into a register so dark and vibrating it shook my teeth. "Let him try every dirty trick he has. The moment he steps foot on my mountain, he steps into a slaughterhouse. I didn't survive a hundred wars to let some cowardly bastard take my mate."
The sheer, arrogant certainty in his voice should have repulsed me. It should have reminded me of Victor’s suffocating control. Instead, a dangerous, reckless thrill bloomed hot and fast in my chest.
My inner wolf reared up inside me, howling in wild, absolute approval.
"You're insane," I breathed, my hands sliding up his chest to rest against his shoulders, feeling the hard, boiling heat of his muscles beneath my palms.
"Only for you," Kaelen murmured.
His head dipped, his lips brushing against the sensitive skin of my throat, tracing a slow, agonizing path upward until his mouth hovered just a fraction of an inch from mine. The electricity snapping between us was so thick I could taste it—copper and smoke.
"Tomorrow, the pack gathers in the Great Hall," Kaelen whispered against my lips, his breath hitching as his fingers tangled tightly in my hair. "They will see you. They will smell you. And they will learn that anyone who threatens my queen answers to me."
Before I could form a single coherent thought, his lips crashed onto mine in a fierce, consuming kiss that stole every last ounce of air, leaving me drowning in fire and completely, irrevocably lost.
