The Messenger Of The Eclipse

416 Words
In the center of the stone-paved courtyard, a foaming black horse stood trembling as a messenger in silver-and-white armor slid clumsily from the saddle. The rider bore no weapons, but the crest emblazoned across his chest—a silver sun eclipsed by a waxing moon—made the breath catch violently in my throat. The Northern Eclipse. My royal bloodline. The family I had fled years ago to escape an arranged, political mating that would have stripped away my freedom entirely. Kaelen stepped in front of me instinctively, his massive frame shielding me from the messenger’s view as pack warriors surrounded the courtyard with weapons drawn. "Identify yourself and state your business in Bloodmoon territory," Kaelen commanded, his voice carrying the crushing weight of alpha authority across the open stones. The messenger dropped to one knee, trembling not from Kaelen’s dominance, but from sheer exhaustion and terror. "I come from the high court of the Northern Eclipse," he panted, looking up with wide, frantic eyes. "I bear an urgent message for Lady Elena... the lost heir." All eyes in the courtyard slowly turned toward me. Kaelen glanced back over his shoulder, his golden eyes searching my face with a dark, unreadable intensity. He didn't demand an explanation; he simply stepped aside, giving me the space to step forward into the cold mountain air. "Speak," I ordered, my voice ringing clear and steady over the silent courtyard. "Your uncle, Lord Cassian, has overthrown the royal council," the messenger blurted out, gripping the dirt between his gauntlets. "He seized the sunstone throne two moons ago. He knows you survived the purge, and he has dispatched a royal death squad across the southern borders. They are coming for you, Lady Elena—not to kill you, but to bind your power to his throne by force." A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the courtyard. My heart hammered against my ribs, a wild, frantic rhythm racing at a hundred miles an hour. The past I had spent years running from was marching straight up our mountain. Before I could even process the warning, a heavy hand gripped my shoulder. I looked up. Kaelen was staring down at me, his jaw clenched so hard the muscle ticked, his amber eyes burning with an absolute, terrifying fury. "Let them come," Kaelen growled, pulling me flush against his side, his arm wrapping around my waist like an unbreakable band of iron. "They'll find out what happens when you try to steal my queen."
