The council’s Mandate

670 Words
The morning sun cast long, golden shards across the stone balcony of the Shadow Keep, but inside the private chambers, the air remained heavy with the scent of pine and charred ash. I stood by the arched window, watching the pack guards patrol the outer ridge. The events of the previous night still hummed beneath my skin, a low, electric vibration reminding me that the fragile peace we had just won was built on a razor's edge. Victor was locked in the lower dungeons, but his shadow still stretched long across the northern peaks. A soft click at the door made me turn. Kaelen stepped inside, carrying two steaming cups of mountain brew. His dark tunic was unbuttoned at the collar, revealing the smooth expanse of his chest and the jagged edge of an old battle scar. His amber eyes caught the morning light, locking onto mine with an intensity that made my breath hitch. "The elders have requested an audience," Kaelen said quietly, handing me a cup before resting his free hand gently on my hip. His thumb stroked the curve of my waist, instantly sending a familiar, melting heat straight to my core. "They want to formally acknowledge your bloodline and finalize the binding rituals." "Let them come," I murmured, leaning into his touch despite the warning bells ringing softly in my mind. "I didn't survive Victor's cage just to hide behind yours." Kaelen’s lips curved into a dark, appreciative smile. He leaned down, pressing a lingering, burning kiss to my temple that left my skin tingling. "They aren't coming to cage you, my queen. They're coming to swear fealty. But be warned—council meetings on this mountain are rarely quiet." An hour later, the smaller chamber of the High Council was packed with the eight senior elders of the Bloodmoon pack. The atmosphere was tense, smelling of old parchment, damp wool, and nervous alpha pheromones. At the head of the long oak table sat Elder Vane, the scarred veteran who had demanded the Trial of Blood. When Kaelen and I walked through the double doors, every elder rose in unison, their heads dipping in a deep, unified bow. "Alpha Kaelen," Vane rumbled, his voice like grinding stones. Then, his gaze shifted to me, his dark eyes carrying a new, profound weight of respect. "And Lady Elena. The pack owes you its survival." I took my seat beside Kaelen at the head of the table, my spine straight, my fingers laced tightly over the wood. "Survival is just the beginning, Elder. Victor's attack proved that the eastern pack won't stop until our borders are broken. We need a strategy, not just defense." Murmurs of agreement rippled through the council. For the next two hours, maps of the jagged mountain passes were unrolled, strategies debated, and supply lines secured. With every sharp insight and tactical command I offered, I watched the skepticism in the elders' eyes dissolve into absolute awe. By the time the meeting adjourned, Kaelen caught my hand beneath the table, his fingers intertwining with mine as a proud, feral grin spread across his face. We were no longer just an Alpha and a stray refugee; we were a reigning force. As the council members filed out of the room, leaving us alone in the quiet shadows of the chamber, Kaelen pulled me abruptly against his chest. Before I could draw breath, his lips crashed onto mine in a fierce, hungry kiss that wiped every trace of politics and war from my mind. His hands gripped my waist, lifting me effortlessly onto the edge of the heavy oak table, caging me in completely. "You were magnificent in there," Kaelen growled against my mouth, his breathing turning ragged as his lips tracked down the sensitive line of my throat. "Every single elder is ready to die for you." "Good," I gasped, my fingers tangling in his dark hair, pulling him closer as the familiar, wild fire surged through my veins. "Because the war has only just begun."
