Into The Shadow Keep

The speed at which Kaelen moved defied human limits. Wind screamed past my ears, tearing the loose strands of my hair into a wild frenzy. Tree trunks dissolved into mere streaks of black and silver as he tore through the thick underbrush, his stride eating up yards of terrain with terrifying ease. Despite the violence of our motion, his grip remained unyielding yet remarkably stable—not a single jarring jolt bruised my battered ribs against his chest. Panic surged anew, clawing at my throat. I was entirely at his mercy, carried deeper into the heart of a territory that every sane person in the region feared to tread. "Put me down," I gasped, my voice barely audible over the roaring wind. "Please, just let me go. They’ll follow us. Victor won't stop—" "Let them try," Kaelen growled, the vibration of his voice rumbling through his chest with a terrifying, absolute finality. He didn't slow down. If anything, his pace accelerated, cutting through a dense veil of hanging moss and branching thorn bushes that parted before his approach as if yielding to a king. The heavy, suffocating atmosphere of the outer border slowly gave way to something older, darker, and infinitely more imposing. The trees began to thin, replaced by colossal pillars of dark grey stone carved straight into the sides of the jagged mountains looming ahead. Torches flared to life in the gloom, casting flickering orange light over massive iron-banded gates that stood sentinel at the entrance of a sprawling fortress carved into the living rock. The Shadow Keep. The stronghold of the Bloodmoon Pack. A fortress that had never fallen in a century of bloodshed. Before I could process the sheer scale of the architecture, the massive gates groaned outward. Sentries clad in obsidian armor and heavy pelts stepped forward, their eyes flashing with feral awareness. But the moment they caught sight of the alpha striding toward them with me clutched in his arms, their weapons lowered instantly, replaced by sweeping, submissive bows. "Alpha," the lead guard barked, his eyes darting to me with sharp, immediate curiosity before masking his expression. "The perimeter has been secured. Scouts report hostile trackers at the outer ridge." "Double the patrols," Kaelen ordered, his voice cracking like a whip across the courtyard. "Lock the lower gates. If a single human or wolf from the eastern pack crosses that threshold, slaughter them." "Understood, Alpha." Kaelen didn't pause for another second. He vaulted up the grand stone steps, pushing past towering double doors into a vast, vaulted interior filled with roaring hearths, dark tapestries, and an oppressive, suffocating weight of raw power. Servants scattered in our wake, gasping softly before dropping their heads in reverence. He carried me down a maze of dimly lit corridors until he reached a massive set of iron-reinforced wooden doors. With a sharp kick of his boot, he shoved them open, striding into a sprawling, fire-lit chamber that reeked of cedar, leather, and absolute dominance—his private quarters. He marched straight toward a massive, fur-draped bed and deposited me gently onto the edge of the mattress. I scrambled backward instantly, my back hitting the carved headboard as I curled my knees to my chest, staring at him with wide, trembling eyes. My breath came in shallow, ragged gasps as I waited for the trap to spring, for the real nightmare to begin. Kaelen didn't close the distance. Instead, he stood tall by the hearth, the flickering flames casting long, dancing shadows across his scarred face. His amber eyes locked onto mine, burning with an intensity that made the air between us crackle with electricity. "You are safe here," Kaelen said, his voice dropping into a low, raw cadence that commanded every ounce of my attention. "And you are never, ever leaving."
