Damon POV
I scanned the quad before finding a shady spot under a tree to finish some reading for economics class. I was a senior at USC and graduation was so close I could taste it. I just hope things remain quiet long enough for me to finish school this time, I could have graduated two years ago if not for the wars. This time specifically was an uprising of rogues in the area against humans. We of course couldn’t allow them to expose us so we went to war to keep the rogues at bay. According to a few we captured before killing, they had grown tired of being shut out of both worlds and humans were easier prey then werewolves. They wanted a place to call their own instead of constantly being on the move to find food and shelter and avoid pack patrols, but still wanting to avoid pack life and hierarchy. I found that odd as my patrol only interfered with rogues attempting to settle on our land, passing through and keeping to themselves was fine. I even allowed them to hunt as long as they never took more than they needed while passing through our territory. Nevertheless, we had to keep our world a secret at all cost. Pushing the rogues back away from human cities only took hours but keeping them back and disposing of them took a little over a year. We still have patrols going beyond our borders to keep an eye on the human ones. It is hard to defend themselves against something they believe only exists in romance novels and teen fangirl movies.
An alpha doesn't really need a degree, all wolves are only required to finish high school on pack grounds, which more closely resembles the education of a bachelor degree in general education. Leading the pack comes with leading the packs various companies so it's not like I need the degree for a good job, but I wanted to feel prepared for my role in every way I could be. Maybe something I learned here could help put a stop to all of the madness among all of the magical creatures... Sadly I knew that was a far fetched dream.
My grandmother used to tell me of a child that would unite werewolf and vampires thus bringing peace to our world. But that's all anyone alive today knew. The vampire overlord made sure to silence this prophecy. That's how I lost most of my family. He wanted the world for himself. Not just magical, but human as well. But at least we knew they would come for us before the humans so we had no worry of them exposing us.
A prophecy is still a prophecy if no one knows it right? Or am I crazy for holding out hope we find this miracle child?
As I sat staring at my book I started sensing eyes burning into me. I looked up to see a group of girls staring shamelessly from across the quad. I hadn't had any real interest in the opposite s*x since coming of age nearly five years ago. At 21 wolves are able to sense their mate, their other half. When I was 4, mates used to come of age at 16 until my mother invited a witch to stay in the pack house with us. My father fought it but she convinced him being friends with a witch could come in handy and this witch was raised by humans. The witch had been with us for one week when she witnessed a girl on her 16th birthday meet her mate who had been waiting for her for 4 long years. The way they threw themselves at each other, growling, moaning and barely able to keep their clothes on long enough to get behind closed doors, disturbed the witch. My mother tried to explain that we age and mature differently than humans, a lot like witches age slower, and that wolves are naturally possessive and animalistic especially in s****l ways but this didn’t make her any more comfortable. She had been raised by christians who believed in a God, now that she knew of her true Goddess I don’t know why she couldn’t let it go. She announced to my father, Alpha at the time, that she planned to cast a spell to make the age 18. This enraged my father and he argued that some wolves aren't lucky like he and my mother, she turned 16 a short 3 days after him and she was his father’s beta’s daughter so they were already well acquainted. Some wolves waited up to 20 years for their mate, a blink of an eye when we can live to be upwards of 400. This only made the witch more determined. She cast the spell before my father had a chance to lock her away but in her anger she said 21 instead of 18. My father made many witch friends in search of one who could reverse it, I’m not totally sure they can’t or if they just won’t.
I still hadn't met my mate but she was already all I wanted. Huge leap from my teenage years when I bedded any female that would let me, despite my wolf’s protests. Yet I decided to give the group of girls a little show, I ran my hands through my golden brown hair and flashed my glowing grin knowing my shirt was lifting high enough to give just a peak of the V leading down to my package. I made every wolf in my pack train and stay fit, the more wolves that can defend themselves the better. I of course had to lead by example so I trained harder than anyone. I made eye contact with one of the girls, knowing the ice blue color was melting her...
*Cough* "Uhm.. Alpha?"
I startled a bit at the sound of my betas voice, bringing me away from the drooling ladies I was teasing. I turned to face him, his normally bright green eyes were dark and sunken in, and his jet black hair was disheveled instead of combed and held in place by whatever that gunk was,(He ran here.. I smell his wolf like he was just standing here.) I nodded inwardly in agreeance with my wolf, his forehead was scrunched in obvious frustration. But not at me. He was the biggest ladies man I knew and did things like this all the time. Until he met his mate of course. Something wasn't right for sure.
"Jax, uhm.. whats up? Why are you at my school?"
"Sorry man but you had your mind shut off and I really needed to show you something."
Shit. I forgot I closed off during that last exam. The quiet was so nice my wolf, Damien, must have wanted to enjoy it longer. The pack needs to be able to reach us jackass. Yea well I needed a nap.. He could be such an ass sometimes. I hope he calms down when we find our mate.
I noticed Jax was holding his phone like it was trying to run away from him, knuckles turning white.
"Let me see that before you crush it."
“Just keep in mind they already left. Without a single trace.”
I took his phone pressing play on the video he had up. I watched in disbelief as a camera caught 3 shadowy figures crossing our borders.
Vampires.. On our land. A deep growl escaped my lips before Jax started coughing and shushing me.
*We are surrounded by humans, alpha. Try to control yourself.*
*Control myself? It's been 10 years since we have seen any of these disgusting creatures. I was so close to finishing school after the rogue issues.* But he was right. Human attention was the last thing we needed right now.
*What were they doing there? Where did they go?*
*We aren’t sure. By the time patrol made it to that area they were gone. And it's nothing but dense woods there.*
Well.. that graduation dream got squashed quickly. There was no way I could focus on school until my pack was safe.
As if he could read my mind Jax broke my inner concentration again. “I have the warriors awaiting our arrival at the training grounds.” We were already walking to my truck in big long strides.
“All of them?” I asked, not expecting him to have gathered 2,000 wolves so quickly.
“All but the highest trained and most gifted who remain on patrol.” He grinned at me knowing He answered all of my questions before I could even get them out. Goddess, he was a good choice for Beta.
The gifted have been our key in staying alive and staying hidden as long as we have. They’re wolves with extraordinary abilities, even for wolves. We were all strong but we had a handful of wolves that were as strong as ten of us. We all had great hearing but a few of us could hear a pin drop from miles away. There were gifted wolves that could influence the elements, they also drew strength and energy from their elements. Being an ungifted Alpha, other than having alpha strength, healing and influence, making it hard for any wolf in my pack to say no to me, a lot of wolves expected me to fear the gifted as my father did. But, I took an opposite approach. I trusted these wolves that were touched by the Goddess. She made me their alpha the same as she gifted them. They respected her will as much as any wolf and as much as it saddens me to admit, my father's passing strengthened our pack in ways he couldn't have dreamed. Gone was his fearful tyranny and repression. No one hid their gifts in fear of being used as a weapon. Some claimed that I used the tragedy of the last vampire attack as a way to gain power. While I don’t deny the pain and loss did help bring us closer together as a pack, they all now see that I would have given anything to save my parents and not have to take over before I even finished high school.
Thankfully my father was able to take out the head of one of the oldest vampire families and covens in North America before he met his fate. When the entire coven turned to dust with him, the outraged overlord retreated, no doubt attempting to tie his kind's fate to only him and not their bloodlines. It would be too easy for us to win if all we had to do was kill as many vampire elders as we could. They had all been in hiding since. We only ever saw young vamps out, ones that might have 2 or 3 “offspring” to turn to ash with them. A vampire could only continue to exist if it’s sire did. So kill a vamp that has sired ¼ of it’s coven and you can almost wipe out the coven. Too bad the more offspring they had, and the more their offspring had, the more powerful they became, thus harder to kill. They also exist, I don't want to say live because I don't feel they are living creatures as they can’t be born, only created, longer than any other creature. My grandmother guessed the vampire overlord to be 2,000 years old and only looked to be in his early 50s.
We pulled up to the packhouse to find most the warriors in wolf form, teeth bared at a figure standing on the porch…. Why had no one linked us? Who was this?
