BRAD
I just sat in the throne room, staring out the big window. The sun was shining, and today was a good day, but I didn’t feel like smiling. My pack was in trouble. We had been through so much. The deadly disease had almost wiped us out. People were sick, and I felt tired all the time.
Something wasn’t right. I couldn’t shake the feeling that the goddess was with us all in this pack. This could literally be just a punishment.
I’ve never actually believed the goddess existed, but seeing all that has happened to the pack lately, I had to believe that this was her punishment. Or maybe it was because of what I did to Jade, betraying her and lying before the Elders. I remembered how I betrayed her, how I turned my back on her when she needed me most and chose Trinia over her. Maybe that’s why the goddess was .
Some say the goddess watches over us, punishing those who stray from her path. And I knew, deep down, that her anger was growing. I saw it in the sickness spreading through the pack, in the people suffering, and in the chaos that refused to end, and I had to find a way to really stop this.
I have actually tried to locate Jade all these years, but all my efforts were futile. She really did hide herself well for the past 6 years.
I really do miss her, but I know I can't go back to the past to fix anything.
I looked out the window again. I saw cars driving in. The doctors and pharmacists have arrived. I didn’t know how I was going to handle this, but I knew I had to find a way, and Trinia wouldn’t mess everything up.
After I got mated and I became an Alpha, she made a lot of decisions for me that endangered the entire lives of my people.
Most days, I always regret why I ever chose Trinia over Jade. Today was supposed to be a good day for me and my Pack. I and the elders were meeting up with the new set of doctors and pharmacists that were sent to our pack for assistance.
We were waiting for them all to arrive, sitting around, talking about what to do next. But the elders couldn’t agree. Some wanted me to approve the presence of more doctors and pharmacists. Others said we should do something different. It was a mess.
One elder, Old Marcus, kept on yelling. His face was serious. “Alpha Brad, we need to bring in strangers. They said they have knowledge about this disease. They might help us.”
Another elder, Elder Sam, shook his head. “No, Marcus. We don’t know these people. We can’t trust them. They could be dangerous. We should only use what we have here.”
I just listened, as I was way stressed and pissed at this point. The pack was fragile. We needed help, but I didn’t want to risk more trouble.
“Maybe we can try both,” I said softly. “Get some outsiders, but we had to be careful. We have to save our people and our heritage. That’s more important than anything.”
The elders looked at each other. Some nodded, others frowned. We all were not just having a united decision, and it was pissing me off.
Suddenly, Trinia walked into the throne room, as paranoid as always. She looked angry, her face red. “Brad, what are you doing? Are you telling me that you approved of this stranger and you didn't even tell me? You can’t just bring strangers here. We don’t know what they’ll do!”
I looked at her. “Trinia, we need help. The pack is suffering. We can’t just sit and wait. We have to try everything, and from the recommendations I got, these guys are good and can work out just perfectly for us.”
She crossed her arms. “I don’t trust them. We don’t know who they are. Maybe they’re here to take us over.”
I sighed. “I understand your worries. But I have to think about everyone. We’re at a dangerous point. If we don’t do something, more will die.”
She looked away, frowning. “I don’t like it. I don’t like any of this.”
I wanted to tell her to calm down, but I knew who she was. She would just use that to start up another round of problems, which I wasn't cut out for right now.
“Trinia,” I said softly, “I know you’re upset. But I need you to let me and the elders do our job of keeping the entire pack safe and not interfere when we are discussing important issues.
She looked at me, her eyes full of anger and worry. “Fine,” she shot back. “But if this goes south, trust me, I wouldn’t be there to get y’all out of this.” She said disrespectfully as she then walked out.
“What a hell of a Luna we do have,” one of the elders said.
Just as I was lost in my thoughts, the door suddenly swung open. I looked up, a little annoyed, expecting it to be one of the elders or maybe the guards.
A tall woman stepped in. She was wearing plain clothes, and her face looked .
The guard at the door asked, “What’s your name, ma’am?”
She looked straight at him and said, “Jade.”
My eyes immediately snapped up and stared at her. I couldn’t believe what I just heard.
Jade? I sat up. It couldn’t be her. Could it?
I blinked a few times, and it was definitely her!
She froze for a second, then slowly looked at me. She was also so surprised as she saw me.
“Brad,” she said gently. “Brad…”
I couldn’t move. I couldn’t believe she was really here. After all these years. She was a pharmacist?
“Y-you, you, why are you here?” I whispered. My hands were clenched into fists. “W-what…” My eyes were now widened.
