Yelling….nothing but yelling… "Mommy?” someone grabs me before I can get a response. It's Clair, my aunt. I like her. “Come on Maria, don't worry about all this” She takes me to the bedroom, sets me on the bed, and locks the door. “Is something wrong? Why is mommy crying?” Clair sits on the bed beside me. “Mommy is okay, daddy is just a little mad, don't worry” she holds me, stroking my hair. After a minute she gets up and opens the closet, grabs something and hides it behind her back. “If you ever feel scared, worried, or upset…” she takes it from behind her back. It's a bunny, he's so cute. “Hold him tight. And everything will feel better.” I grab the little bunny. “What's his name?” I ask Clair. She thinks for a moment and then she says we can figure his name out using a game…" Okay Maria, say the first letter that pops into your head” I blurt out the letter 'N'. She asks “What about Nick?" I don't like that name. I think she knew that based on the face I made. She laughs. "Okay, you got any ideas then?" I think for a moment before saying the first name I think of the beginning sound "Ni". "Nymus!" She c***s an eyebrow at me. She's unsure about the name at first, but she accepts it.
BANG!
I start to panic. "Clair, what was that??" She stands up quickly and tells me to stay in here. She rushes out the door shutting it behind her. I hold Nymus as tight as I can, closing my eyes as a tear rolls down my cheek. I hear yelling…nothing but yelling…
