Sisters, Secrets and Shadows

1062 Words
April had just walked into the family’s apartment, her body tingling with excitement from reuniting with the love of her life. She couldn’t wait to put a call across, to even tell Gael all about it. Most importantly, she got the job, and soon they could move out and be on their own. Her enthusiasm waned as she heard voices coming from the living room. When she pushed open the door, she found Gael and her half sister, Sophia trapped in a loud argument. “You are so dumb! You and your foolish sister! You don’t deserve to live here. You only live here because my mother allows it!” Sophia fired at Gael. Like April, she had long red curls and sparkling blue eyes. She was a product of an affair her father had with her mother Irina while being married to their own mother. April had only been two years when this had happened. This subsequently led to the c***k in the marriage. Presently, her mother had moved on with another man and left them at their mercy of their abusive father, step-mother and Sophia. “Don’t you ever talk to me that way!” Gael fired back. “Oh, you’re a fine one to talk to now!” Sophia, with her hand raised, moves to strike Gael. “Hold it right there. Don’t you dare touch my sister!” April fired. Anger flashed within her eyes as she moved towards Sophia. Sophia shifted; carefully she accessed her half siblings. “You now conspire against me? There’ll be consequences!” Sophia bellowed, before angrily brushing past April and rushing out. Tears spiraled down Gael’s pale and innocent cheeks. Quickly, April drew her into her arms for a warm hug. “Don’t worry your sweet head Gael. I’m positive things will change for the best…” April’s lips moved quietly. They couldn’t keep up with the incessant quarrels launched by Sophia and her mother. “Tell me, what happened this time?” She inhaled deeply and pushed Gael gently. Gael sniffed in some air, “I found her in our bedroom, rummaging through our things. I was shocked. I had to confront her.” April’s cheeks reddened at once. The creamy base of her neck slowly turned into the fiery color of her hair. “We’ll be out soon. I got the job.” April calmly returned. Gael screamed, then quickly folded her palm across her mouth. Not able to contain her joy, she threw her arms around her sister. “This is wonderful news! Hotel Harmony is the biggest deal in the hospitality industry.” Gael tightened the hug. “I had a miracle.” April smiled. When she closed her eyes and pondered on her miracle, she realized that perhaps destiny had brought her and Jayden together. Her love for him only doubled. Deep down, she knew that he was far above her, in class, in pedigree but she was confident in her own skin. And all that mattered was the love he had professed for her. On hearing about a miracle, Gael gently withdrew and faced her sister. “Tell me…” April collected Gael’s slender fingers and gave them a reassuring squeeze. “I met with Jayden Throws. Turns out he’s the owner of Hotel Harmony. Can you believe that?” “Jayden Throws?” Gael’s light brown eyes dilated. Yes, she knew about her sister’s longtime schoolboy crush. Anyone that knew April could tell that story. Jayden was always on her sister’s lips. But she’d never heard of the surname. “I can’t believe you. Are you sure about this?” Gael chuckled excitedly. She reached for her mobile and quickly tapped its screen. Without waiting for more explanation, she googled ‘Jayden Throws.’ April only watched her, wondering why it was so difficult for her younger sister to believe. But she didn’t care. While waiting for Gael, she equally withdrew her phone from her bag and saved Jayden’s number. At first, she’d wanted to call him, but she realized it was better to send a text. "Hi Jayden. It’s April Lancaster. Just checking up on our plan later tonight?" She sent the message. Three minutes later, a reply dropped. "Oh darling! Thanks for reaching out. So are we on for later tonight?", Jayden replied. Without hesitation. "Yes! Gladly. So eager…", she replied. "Good. Where can I pick you up?", Jayden asked. "Oakclave Lane, at the Oakclave Park. I’d wait for you there." She replied. "Prepare. You won’t regret this." Jayden sent. April looked up from her phone smiling. She caught a glimpse of her sister searching her phone. Her heart swelled with joy. It was all like a dream, only that in six hours time, she would meet the love of her life. On that note, she had to prepare and look her best. When Gael was finished with her search, she looked up. “Jayden Throws is actually the youngest billionaire in the entire US. And Fifth in the world after the Princes of the Arab world who trade in gold, diamond and other precious stones. Do you understand what this means? Is this the same Jayden you always crushed on?” Gael handed the phone over to her. As April took in the words, relating it to the image of a very gorgeous dark haired man with ice blue eyes, she realized that there was so much that she didn’t know about her Jayden. “I can’t believe this! I knew he was from a wealthy home, but I had no idea his own fortunes had changed…”April stuttered. “Yes. Your Jayden is now a billionaire!” Gael whispered. April took a deep breath, “I have a date with him later tonight. You’ll help me prepare, will you?” She smiled at Gael. As both sisters walked towards their bedroom, they had no idea of a pair of dark eyes that’d been watching them. Sophia’s heart pounded fast as she listened to their footsteps. Clearly, her half sisters had developed a plan to leave the house. Something more excited her about their conversation. All her life, she’d dreamt of marrying a rich man and living in luxury. Perhaps it wasn't the same ‘Jayden Throws,’ because the thought of such a highly placed man being with April was simply impossible.
