— The Morning After
Eleanor slowly opened her eyes.
For a few seconds, she simply stared at the unfamiliar ceiling, still caught between sleep and reality.
Then the memories came rushing back.
Her cheeks instantly burned.
“Oh my God…”
She pulled the blanket over her face.
Everything that had happened last night replayed in her mind—the way Lucien had looked at her, the things she had said, the way she had tried so desperately to hide her embarrassment.
She wanted the ground to swallow her whole.
How am I supposed to face him after this?
Eleanor slowly sat up and buried her face in her hands.
She had spent so much time telling herself that Lucien Moretti was a man she could never trust.
Yet somehow, one night with him had left her completely confused.
A soft knock came from the door.
Eleanor froze.
“Eleanor?”
Her heart dropped.
Lucien.
She quickly pulled herself together.
“Come in.”
The door opened.
Lucien stepped inside, looking annoyingly calm.
His eyes immediately found hers.
“Good morning.”
“Morning,” she murmured.
He studied her for a moment.
“You look nervous.”
“I just woke up.”
“So?”
“So… nothing.”
A faint smile appeared on his lips.
“Still embarrassed?”
Eleanor's eyes widened.
“No!”
Lucien chuckled.
“I didn't even say what you were embarrassed about.”
She stared at him.
“Lucien!”
He laughed softly.
“Relax. I'm not here to tease you.”
“You're already teasing me.”
“Maybe a little.”
He walked closer, stopping just a few steps away.
“Get dressed.”
Eleanor frowned.
“Why?”
“I want to take you somewhere.”
“Where?”
“Away from everyone.”
Her curiosity immediately replaced some of her embarrassment.
“Where are we going?”
Lucien's eyes held hers.
“For a ride on the water.”
“Just us?”
“Just us.”
Eleanor hesitated.
Lucien smiled.
“Unless you're suddenly afraid of being alone with me.”
She narrowed her eyes.
“I am not afraid of you.”
“Good.”
He turned toward the door.
“Then get ready.”
Eleanor watched him leave, her heart beating faster than she wanted it to.
She sighed.
This man was going to be the death of her.
Eleanor wore a tight, slim-fitting gown that traced her silhouette as she stood near the window.
Before she could turn around, Lucien stepped close behind her.
His hand settled firmly around her waist, drawing her back against him.
Eleanor’s breath caught.
Lucien lowered his head, his lips brushing softly against the bare skin near her shoulder.
The unexpected touch sent a shiver through her.
“Lucien…” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
His hold tightened slightly around her waist.
“Shh…” Lucien murmured, his voice low beside her ear. “Stay still.”
She didn't know what he was thinking.
And somehow, that frightened her more. For a moment, neither of them moved.
Then Lucien lifted his head.
“Ready?”
Eleanor blinked.
“That’s it?”
A faint smirk touched his lips.
“What were you expecting?”
Her face immediately turned red.
“Nothing.”
“Good.”
He released her waist and walked toward the door.
Eleanor stared after him in disbelief.
Was he deliberately trying to make her nervous?
She grabbed her handbag and hurried after him.
“Wait for me!”
Lucien glanced over his shoulder.
“I thought you weren't afraid of me.”
“I said I wasn't.”
“Then why are you following me so quickly?”
“Because you walk too fast!”
A quiet laugh escaped him.
Eleanor stopped for a second.
She had never heard him laugh like that before.
She smiled brightly, her chin lifting slightly as she walked toward Lucien.
