CHAPTER SEVEN PARTNERS “She is my aunty,” Helen told Crystal when she noticed her frowning. “Aunty?” Crystal repeated. “Yup. She is.” Helen smiled. Miss Sara stepped forward and looked around at the students. “So, let's begin. I'm sure Mr. David has already given you all some insight into what Vanguard International is about.” She paused, allowing her words to sink in. “I'm your Criminastics teacher.” The students remained quiet. “Criminastics is all about strength, flexibility, and mobility.” Miss Sara slowly walked in front of them. “For now, we will be building your strength and flexibility before we move on to the harsher training.” She looked at the students who had been at Vanguard for a while. “Some of you have already started this training, but for the newcomers, we'll begin with the basics.” Crystal listened carefully. “Your names will be paired together as partners. Once I call your name, go to your partner and help each other build strength and flexibility.” Crystal secretly hoped Helen would be her partner. At least Helen was someone she knew. Miss Sara picked up the list. “Alexandra and Kevin.” Lexi's expression immediately changed. She clearly wasn't happy about being paired with Kevin. “Helen and Victor.” Helen sighed. “Crystal and Alexander.” Crystal blinked. She slowly turned toward Alexander. Across the training area, Lexi looked furious. She hated being paired with Kevin. Why did the new girl get Alexander instead of her? Crystal noticed her expression. “Your sister doesn't look happy,” she whispered. “Yeah, I know she won't be,” Helen replied. “I don't like my partner either. At least you got lucky.” “Lucky?” Crystal looked toward Alexander. “That guy literally glares at me. He doesn't look happy either.” Helen laughed softly. “Well, good luck. Mine is a weirdo.” She pointed toward Victor. Victor was standing there, shamelessly smiling as though he had just won the lottery. Crystal and Helen smiled at each other before walking toward their partners. --- Crystal approached Alexander. He was already working with a barbell. “Hi,” she said, trying to start a conversation. Alexander ignored her. Crystal frowned. She watched him for a few seconds. “Ignoring me isn't going to build your aura, you know.” Alexander stopped. He slowly placed the barbell down and stared at her. “What?” Crystal blinked. She wondered why he was looking at her when she wasn't even trying to get his attention anymore. “You talk too much, Crystal.” His voice was deep. So deep that Crystal imagined that if his voice were a tank, she would probably fall straight into it. Suddenly, Crystal burst out laughing. Her laughter caught Lexi's attention while she was busy arguing with Kevin. Alexander stared at Crystal as if she had completely lost her mind. “You know my name,” Crystal teased. Alexander's eyebrows furrowed. He seemed to be wondering whether she had a few screws loose in her head. “You're weird,” he commented. “No, you don't understand.” Crystal pointed at him. “You actually like me.” Alexander stared at her. Crystal smiled confidently. “According to the rumors, you don't like people. But you know my name.” For a moment, Alexander said nothing. “Sure,” he finally replied. “If that's what you want to believe.” He picked up the barbell again. “Just stay out of my way.” Alexander walked toward the bench and continued his workout. Crystal remained standing there. She stared after him. Then a huge smile slowly spread across her face. He knows my name. For some strange reason, Crystal couldn't stop smiling. Maybe she was simply amused that the school's coldest student had remembered her name. But Crystal had no idea that her little joke had just caught the attention of someone else watching from across the training ground.
