CHAPTER THREE THE FIRST TEST “Cut the crap. Why are you here, half?” the teacher asked as soon as she and Crystal entered the vice principal's office. Crystal looked around the room. Behind a large desk sat the vice principal, a female vampire with neatly styled black hair cut into a bob without bangs. Her yellow eyes were sharp enough to cut glass. She wore red lipstick that made her already pale face look even more intimidating. Just looking at her was enough to give Crystal goosebumps. “Crab? I don't eat crab,” Crystal replied, looking bored. “I'm serious,” the teacher said, glaring at her. “Okay. Whether you believe me or not, that's your business. But I actually don't know where I am or how I got here. I was holding a necklace and then—boom! I'm here.” Crystal spread her hands, waiting for either of them to say something. “What is your name?” the vice principal asked in a frightening voice. “Crystal.” The vice principal studied her. “Crystal, your story isn't believable, and you aren't scared of us. Now, tell me the truth.” The vice principal turned toward the teacher. “Miss Sara, you can go back to your class.” “Hold up, Miss. But I'm not lying,” Crystal protested. The vice principal studied her carefully, as if trying to figure her out. “You know this is a vampire school, and the students outside could devour you at any time they wanted.” Crystal nodded. “I know. I saw the fangs and all that. But, to be honest, you guys aren't that wicked of a vampire.” Miss Sara and the vice principal stared at her in shock. “How can you say something like that?” Miss Sara asked. Crystal shrugged. “What? I'm just being honest.” Miss Sara looked at the vice principal. “So your whole story is true?” “Yeah. Didn't you hear me the first time?” Crystal couldn't understand why they kept asking her the same questions. Don't supernatural beings know supernatural things too? She sighed. Then she suddenly breathed in. A sweet floral perfume filled her nose. Crystal glanced at the vice principal. She didn't look like someone who would wear such a soft perfume. “Maybe I can stay here for some time while you research how to get me out of here,” Crystal suggested. The vice principal raised an eyebrow. Crystal continued. “Think about it. If you throw me out, I'll tell the people living around here that this school is full of lies. That could destroy your reputation, right?” She smiled. Crystal was blackmailing a vampire. And she knew it. The vice principal remained silent. She seemed to be considering the consequences. Finally, she sighed. “Miss Sara, please take Crystal to her class.” Crystal smiled. “And Crystal, I want you to keep a low-key vibe. Here are some things you will need.” Crystal looked at the things the vice principal handed her. “I like the way you think.” She winked. But behind her smile, Crystal was hiding her fear. If the vice principal could allow her to stay, what would stop her from getting rid of Crystal one day without anyone knowing? Miss Sara stared at the vice principal for a moment, clearly unable to understand how she had agreed to this. A half in the school was already a disgrace. If word got out that Vanguard International now allowed halfs, their reputation could be ruined. After standing there for a while, Miss Sara finally left with Crystal. Crystal followed her, looking as bored as ever. The vice principal leaned back in her chair. She closed her eyes and pictured Crystal in her mind. Crystal looked as plain as Jane. Everything about her seemed brown, from her hair down to her clothes. Brown hair. Brown eyes. A loose brown sweater. Brown leggings. Yet despite her simple appearance, Crystal had a beautiful face. She looked like someone who would be weak. But her words proved otherwise. The way she spoke. The way she wasn't afraid. The way she had stood in a vampire school as a half without trembling. There was something unusual about her. The vice principal smiled. Then she opened her eyes. She had to figure out what Crystal really was. --- Meanwhile, Crystal entered a classroom where the students were already seated. She immediately noticed two empty seats. One was between the two boys from earlier. The other was beside a girl who looked frightened. Crystal didn't need to think twice. She definitely didn't want to sit between those two boys. Kevin was already waving at her with a huge smile. The cold boy, however, was glaring at her. Crystal ignored both of them. She walked toward the frightened girl and sat beside her. When she turned around, she noticed another girl sitting beside them. The girl had straight black hair with bangs and red eyes, just like the two boys. They were all sitting at the back of the classroom. Crystal turned toward the girl beside her. “Hi.” “Hi,” the girl replied. “My name is Helen.” She looked almost exactly like the girl Crystal had seen sitting with the boys earlier. Crystal studied her red eyes. “My name is Crystal. You're red-eyed?” “Yes, I am. Alexandra is my sister.” “Alexandra? Who is that?” Crystal was only trying to continue the conversation because she could feel the students staring at her. “She’s the one sitting beside them,” Helen replied. Crystal looked toward the front. “Oh. Okay.” Helen smiled. She had blonde hair and smelled faintly of strawberries. Crystal turned back toward the front when a teacher walked into the classroom. “Hello, students.” The male teacher looked like he was in his thirties. But Crystal knew he probably wasn't. Vampires always looked younger than their actual age. “I'm Mr. David, your IQ teacher.” Mr. David picked up a book and looked around the classroom. “You all came here for one reason.” The classroom became silent. “And that reason is to get a wish.” Crystal's eyes widened slightly. Mr. David continued. “If you reach the top five, Vanguard International will grant your wish.” He paused. “Vanguard International has always been known for granting wishes. But getting into the top five won't be easy.” Crystal listened carefully. “To reach the top five, you are expected to pass three major subjects.” He raised three fingers. “IQ.” One finger went down. “Criminastics.” Another finger went down. “And forgery.” Crystal swallowed. Mr. David continued. “But that's not all.” The classroom became even quieter. “You will also have to complete two years as spy interns.” Crystal's heart began pounding. Spy interns? Mr. David closed his book. “After completing everything successfully, your wishes will be granted.” He looked around the room. “For now, you're here to learn. Your points will determine your ranking, so make sure you're prepared to face the difficulties ahead.” He paused. “Being a spy isn't as simple as you might think.” Crystal slowly sank into her seat. These students weren't here to play. They were here to win. And they were vampires. Crystal suddenly realized something. She was in deep trouble. Mr. David buttoned his suit and turned toward the class. “Now, I have five tricky brain questions here with me.” Several students straightened in their seats. “Do well, because whoever wins will receive two points as soon as the score screen begins.” Crystal's eyes narrowed. Two points? Mr. David smiled. “First question.” He looked at the clock. “You have less than two minutes.” The entire classroom went silent. Crystal stared at him. Then he revealed the question. And Crystal's confidence disappeared.
