THE MARK.

334 Words
Willow Cross was seventeen when Lucien found her. She was sitting beneath an ancient oak tree in the royal gardens, completely unaware that the most powerful Alpha alive was watching her. She was reading. Nothing more. Her long dark hair fell over one shoulder. Her expression was peaceful. She looked ordinary. That was what frightened Lucien. He had expected the woman from the prophecy to be powerful. Instead, Willow was simply Willow. No magical aura. No extraordinary wolf. No ancient bloodline. Nothing. Except the mark. Lucien's gaze dropped when she shifted. A glimpse of her lower back appeared beneath the edge of her blouse. A crescent shaped mark. Surrounded by delicate lines resembling a wolf's claws. Lucien went completely still. His wolf recognized it. The Moon Mark. The symbol from the prophecy. His stomach tightened. The girl looked up. Their eyes met. Something struck Lucien in the chest. The mate bond. Instant. Absolute. Violent. His wolf wanted to claim the connection immediately. Lucien refused. He was twenty-seven. She was seventeen. He would not allow instinct to dictate her future. Willow smiled nervously. "Your Majesty?" Lucien forced himself to speak. "Go inside." She blinked. "Did I do something?" "No." "Then why are you angry?" Because you're my mate. Because the prophecy has found you. Because the strongest wolf in existence has just discovered the one person capable of destroying everything he has built. Lucien's voice remained cold. "You should stay away from me." Willow's smile disappeared. "Why?" "Because I'm dangerous." She looked at him for a long moment. Then quietly said, "I don't think you're dangerous." Lucien's jaw tightened. "You should." He walked away. Behind him, Willow watched him disappear. She didn't know that Lucien spent the entire night awake. He stood before his bedroom window while his wolf paced inside him. Mate. Lucien closed his eyes. She's too young. Protect her. "I will." Stay with her. "No." His wolf snarled. Lucien opened his eyes. "I will protect her from everyone." A pause. "Even me."
