FATE WAITED FIVE YEARS.

928 Words
Willow Cross stopped waiting for Lucien Darius Vorn when she turned twenty two. It wasn't a dramatic decision. There was no final confrontation. No tears. No goodbye. One morning, she simply realized she was tired. Tired of wondering. Tired of hoping. Tired of seeing the Alpha King's black cars passing through the city and wondering whether he might finally stop. He never did. So Willow built a life without him. At twenty three, she had her own apartment, her own work, her own friends. She was no longer the girl beneath the oak tree. She had become a woman who knew exactly what she wanted. And she wanted nothing to do with Lucien. At least, that was what she told herself. Then came the royal announcement. The Alpha King was getting married. To Seraphina Vale. The announcement was everywhere. Newspapers. Television. Social media. The entire supernatural kingdom celebrated. Willow stared at the photograph. Lucien stood beside Seraphina in formal black. He looked exactly as she remembered. Cold. Powerful. Beautiful in a way that was almost cruel. Her fingers tightened around the phone. Five years. She had spent five years trying to forget his face. And one photograph brought everything back. She whispered, "Congratulations, Your Majesty." She put the phone down. That should have been the end of it. It wasn't. Because at midnight, someone knocked on her door. Willow froze. Another knock. Slow. Heavy. Her heart began beating faster. She approached the door. "Who is it?" Silence. She opened it. And Lucien stood there. Rainwater streamed from his black hair. His shirt clung to his powerful frame. His jaw was tight. His eyes were almost completely black. He looked furious. But beneath the fury was something Willow had never seen before. Desperation. Her breath caught. "Lucien." His eyes moved over her face. Five years of restraint disappeared from his expression. "Willow." She gripped the door. "Why are you here?" His voice was low. "I don't know." "You're getting married tomorrow." "I know." "Then you should go." He stepped closer. The bond between them pulsed. Willow's breath caught. Lucien stopped himself before touching her. "I came here to leave you alone." She gave a bitter laugh. "That doesn't make sense." "No." His gaze dropped to her lips. "It doesn't." The rain continued falling behind him. Willow should have closed the door. Instead, she whispered, "Then why are you really here?" Lucien looked into her eyes. For once, the ruthless Alpha King had no lie prepared. "Because I spent five years pretending I didn't want you." His voice dropped. "And tonight, I finally ran out of lies." Willow's heart hammered. She knew she should send him away. She knew about Seraphina. She knew what tomorrow would bring. But Lucien had spent five years buried beneath her skin, beneath her memories, beneath every attempt she'd made to forget him. And now he was standing in front of her. Not as King. Not as Alpha. Just Lucien. The man she'd never stopped loving. She stepped aside. He entered. And when the door closed behind him, neither of them knew that by sunrise, their lives would be permanently changed. Because that night would give them something neither had expected. A secret. A consequence. __________________ DAWN. Willow woke slowly. For one perfect moment, she smiled. Lucien was beside her. His arm rested protectively around her waist. His breathing was deep and even. He looked completely different asleep. Younger. Less severe. Almost peaceful. Willow studied him quietly. This was the man she'd loved since she was seventeen. The man she'd spent years trying to forget. She reached toward him. Then stopped. A sudden sound came from the television. A news broadcast. Willow turned her head. The screen showed the royal crest. Her stomach tightened. The reporter's voice filled the room. "His Majesty Alpha King Lucien Darius Vorn will formally announce his engagement to Seraphina Vale this evening..." Willow went completely still. Lucien's eyes opened. He immediately understood. "Willow—" She pushed herself upright. "You said you came because you couldn't walk away from me." "I meant it." "Then you're still marrying her?" Lucien sat up. "It's complicated." She laughed once. There was no humor in it. "Of course it is." "Willow." "Don't." He reached for her. She pulled away. "You don't get to spend the night with me and then stand beside another woman as though I never existed." Lucien's expression hardened with guilt. "I never intended to hurt you." "You always do." The words struck him. Willow climbed out of bed. Her hands trembled as she gathered her robe. Lucien watched her. He wanted to explain. The council. The treaty. The territories that depended on the alliance. The fact that breaking the engagement could ignite a war. But none of those things mattered while Willow stood there looking at him as though he'd broken her heart all over again. He reached for his shirt. "Let me fix this." Willow looked at him. "Can you?" Lucien couldn't answer. And that silence told her everything. She turned away. "Go." "Willow—" "Go, Lucien." He stared at her for several seconds. Then he left. The door closed. Willow stood alone. She pressed a hand against her stomach. A strange warmth moved through her. She frowned. She had no idea what it meant. Across the city, Lucien entered his waiting car. His expression was cold again. The Alpha King had returned. But something had changed. His wolf was unusually quiet. Almost satisfied. Almost protective. Neither Lucien nor Willow knew why. They would soon find out.
