Chapter 3

Pain pulsed through Illana's head like a relentless drumbeat as consciousness slowly returned. She became aware of a dull ache spreading from her temples, and her body felt heavy, as if each limb was weighted down. Opening her eyes felt like an immense effort, the world around her swimming in a haze of blurred shapes and muted colors. The first thing she noticed was the absence of rain and the familiar smell of smoke. Instead, the air carried a clean, earthy scent, reminiscent of pine and damp soil. Confusion clouded her mind as she tried to make sense of her surroundings. This wasn’t the chaos of the accident scene, nor the sterile, antiseptic atmosphere of a hospital. She blinked several times, trying to clear her vision. The room she found herself in was rustic yet cozy, its walls made of rough-hewn wood adorned with tapestries depicting scenes of nature—forests, rivers, and animals she couldn’t quite identify. The light filtering through a small, circular window was soft and golden, casting warm patterns on the floor. Illana shifted slightly, wincing as pain flared in her head and ribs. She realized she was lying on a low, sturdy bed draped with woven blankets that felt soft against her skin. The clothes she wore were unfamiliar—a loose-fitting tunic of soft fabric and pants that seemed to be made from a coarse material, yet surprisingly comfortable. Fear gripped her chest as fragmented memories of the accident flooded back. She recalled the rain, the crash, and the overwhelming sense of helplessness. But where was she now? How had she ended up in this strange room? As she tried to sit up, a wave of dizziness washed over her, forcing her back against the pillows. She closed her eyes, taking slow, deep breaths to steady herself. Questions raced through her mind, but she couldn’t find any answers. Panic threatened to overwhelm her, but she pushed it down, focusing on regaining her strength. The door creaked open, and Illana’s eyes snapped open, her heart racing. A tall figure stood in the doorway, silhouetted against the soft light. As he stepped into the room, she saw that it was a man—a man with piercing blue eyes and a presence that seemed to fill the space around him. “Welcome, Luna,” the man said in a deep, calm voice. “I am Alpha Kael. You are safe now.” Illana’s confusion deepened. Luna? Alpha? None of this made sense. She struggled to find her voice, her throat dry and scratchy. “Where... where am I?” she managed to croak out, her voice barely above a whisper. “You are in my home,” Kael replied, his voice gentle yet authoritative. “You had an accident, but you’re safe here with us.” Illana’s mind raced. Accident? Was he talking about the crash? But this place—this wasn’t a hospital. And who was “us”? She looked around, her eyes searching for any clue to explain her situation. Kael seemed to sense her confusion. “I know this is a lot to take in,” he said, his tone reassuring. “But you need to rest now. We will explain everything in due time.” Illana nodded weakly, her head spinning with unanswered questions. She lay back against the pillows, her thoughts in turmoil. What had happened to her? How had she ended up in this strange place, with this man who spoke of accidents and safety? As exhaustion pulled her back into darkness, one thought echoed in her mind: What kind of world had she awakened to? ---
