28 It was a four-hour drive to Charlotte’s university, so we had not seen her since the first term started in September. The students there, and in our school district as well, enjoyed a one-week break on Thanksgiving week. Saturday morning Crystal and I set out to meet Charlotte, along with her university roommate and girlfriend, for lunch and then haul them both back to our farm for the week. Charlotte’s roommate, Antonia Gonzales, usually called Toni, was from Puerto Rico and it was too expensive for her to fly home for a week on the break. This was a common problem for foreign students and others a long way from home, so many universities and colleges allowed these students to remain in the residences over the breaks, especially Thanksgiving and Christmas.
