Julian's POV The smile that floods my face when she says that is unmatched. I look at Jocelyn and somehow, the shock written all over her face makes me really happy. I guess she thought I was joking last night. Or maybe she felt my mother would listen to her over me. I find that absolutely funny and ridiculous. Jocelyn says nothing. Instead, she nods and takes her leave. As soon as the door closes, my mother sighs. "She was a good one," "Not to me." When she turns, she's glaring at me. "You know why I laid her off, right?" "It's not that deep." I say it with so much nonchalance that it makes my mother flare. "You followed her to her room, forcefully pushed her door open and coerced her into sleeping with you! Are you crazy?" "She didn't object," I shrug. "You're such a stupid person. She didn't object but this morning, you woke up in her bed and made it look like she was the one that drugged you. How could you be so stupid, Julian? How? You sleep with everything and anything and you know I have a strict policy about my maids having affairs with you or anyone related to me and you went ahead to do it!" "You should have told her about it. Maybe her resistance would have been better and stronger," Whack! That slap has my ears tingling. My mother hasn't done that in years so she must be really angry. "I am disappointed in you! I am really ashamed that a man of your caliber would do that and if you don't see how terrible you are, I don't want to ever speak to you again!" "You're joking, right? This is one of the tantrums you throw when you're really mad at me so I'm not going to take you serious," Her eyes are wide in anger and she points at the door. "Get out of my room and when you're ready to become a responsible and respectful man, you can visit. But now? I don't want you around my premises. Make sure you go about your business and don't call me to check up on me!" "Of course, I won't," I say, also getting angry. "Don't call me when something is wrong because I am not going to pick up," "Like I ever have." I leave her room and bang the door shut in anger. As I walk down the corridor, I pass by Jocelyn's room. Her door is open and two women are standing int the middle of her room and talking to her; Tiffany and Rosá. I continue on my way and getting downstairs, the only person I see is Jamal. He's seated on the couch, legs shaking like he's waiting impatiently for someone. "Jamal?" I call. He turns to see me and stands to his feet. "Where's everyone?" "Rita looked everywhere for you, man," He says but something sounds off in his voice. "She didn't see me, did she?" "She did. She was looking for you after all the guests had gone home because she needed to drive to the airport early the next morning. No one knew where you were so she decided to check for herself and when she came back, she didn't look really happy. She was crying and calling you all sort of names so I'm guessing she saw you f*****g the maid?" I slipp my fingers into my hair. "f**k!" "I don't believe you actually stooped so low to sleep with that woman." Ignoring him, I take out my phone from my pocket. I dial her number but it goes straight to voicemail. "She must be on the airplane." "She should have gotten to Manhattan. That's where she told me she was taking a flight to." I say while calling her number again. She picks up and my eyes widen in communication. Jamal gets me and keeps shut. "Hello, baby." "Why are you blowing up my phone with calls?" She sounds really offended. I can hear it in the harshness of her voice. "I just called because I want to apologize. I totally forgot you were traveling this morning, honest," "And you went ahead to f**k the maid? You forgot about my flight but you didn't forget to cheat on me. I thought you were racist? Which is terrible by the way." "I—" She cuts me short. "Listen, Julian. I think you're a terrible person and you don't deserve anything good coming to you. You admitted to being a racist last night and that was when every respect I had for you died. And also, you didn't give her a job in your company because she was black? Absolutely terrible. And last night, you followed her to her room and you both f****d? Jesus, Julian! I can't be with you. Don't you call me again, get that? Delete my contact on your phone because I'd be blocking you everywhere soon. By the way, your friends are also terrible, too. Tell them I said that." Bleep. "Fuck." I muttered when she ended the call. Jamal looked at me with expectancy and I was just about to crush that. "She called us all terrible people. Man, she's mad. I guess we're over now," "Is that a good thing?" Jamal asked, not even affected by what she said. "I don't know. I feel really guilty. I messed up a lot of things." "Why do you feel guilty?" Just as he asks that question, I hear the sound of footsteps coming down the staircase and the rolling of luggages and when we both turn our heads, it's Jocelyn with Tiffany and Rosá behind her. They're talking and laughing like something terrible did not just happen. What shocks me the most is how they pass by me like I wasn't standing there in flesh. "You deserve better, Jocelyn. This was never for you," Rosá says as they walk out the door. Jocelyn laughs. "I really do. You know, it's good I got to experience this. It helped me understand that people can be terrible in different shades. f**k you and the next morning, they blame it on you like the coward they are. Afraid of me like he was when that woman took his father. I guess he's still a little boy." "Jocelyn!" Collective gasps are heard. Jamal holds me back. "Don't go there, man. She's trying to rile you up. " "Well, f**k her then."
