At the words, the old man’s eyes changed, “With mom and dad?”
She slowly looked up and saw the grandson that she had been thinking about day and night was standing not far away.
“Archer ..... You’re back?” Her voice was shaking.
Alex stood still, looking at his grandmother in front of him with complicated eyes.
Sophie gently squeezed his fingers and whispered, “Alex, this is your grandmother.”
Alex took a deep breath, “Grandma, I’m back.”
The old madam stretched out her wrinkled hand and stroked his cheeks, her eyes glistening with tears.
“All these years, I never gave up looking for you, you’re finally back ...... ”
Alex lowered his head, “I’m sorry, Grandma, for letting you worry.”
He briefly described the plane crash and rescue by falling into the sea, as well as the memory loss.
The old lady patted his shoulder heartily, “It’s okay, it’s good to be back.”
She took her grandson’s hand and brought him to the tea table to sit down, “Let grandma take a good look at you.”
Sophie hugged Teddy and silently retreated to the side, leaving space for the grandchildren.
“Archer, you’ve lost weight and gotten darker.” Old Lady Ji scrutinized carefully, her eyes full of heartache, “These years, have you lived well?”
Alex warmly soothes, “Grandma, I’ve had a pretty good time.”
“That’s good.” The old madam held his hand, her eyes unable to leave for a moment.
She didn’t ask her grandson about his specific experiences over the years, nor could she bear to dig deeper.
She then asked the butler to bring a photo album, “These might help you remember something.”
The album flipped open and inside were pictures of Alex from childhood to adulthood.
Sophie came over holding Teddy in her arms.
Teddy reached out his little hand and pointed to the little boy in the photo, “Is this Daddy when he was little?”
The old lady touched her great-grandson’s head, “Well, these are your dad.”
Teddy’s eyes lit up, “Wow, Daddy looks just like me!”
The old lady was amused and cracked a smile, the sadness in her heart washed away.
“Little baby, you said it backwards, it’s you who looks like daddy, not daddy who looks like you.”
Teddy laughed happily, “Hee hee, I look like daddy and I look like mommy.”
Sophie smiled and rubbed the child’s soft little face.
The old lady gave Sophie a thoughtful look.
Sophie knew the old lady was sizing her up, but she feigned ignorance and avoided meeting her eyes.
To be honest, apart from Alex, who had lost his memory, the old lady was the second person who made her feel afraid.
The old lady’s eyes seemed to be able to see through people’s hearts and make them hide.
---
They stayed at Grandma’s house for a long time until Teddy was so sleepy he yawned before reluctantly leaving.
It was getting dark and their car drove smoothly down the highway.
Teddy was sound asleep in his child seat.
Sophie glanced at the baby and averted her eyes to look out the window at Alex.
He was leaning back in his seat, eyes closed.
After a full day together, she could feel Alex being hot and cold towards her.
Obviously, he was close in the morning, and the next second, he was back to being distant.
She was never quite able to pin him down.
But Alex with amnesia had a mind that was harder to guess and trickier than before amnesia.
It was something she hadn’t anticipated.
Sophie was mentally mulling over her next plan, her gaze inadvertently sweeping out the window.
Just then, a small figure suddenly broke into her line of sight.
A small, earthy-colored dog was weaving its way through the traffic in the night.
Its hind legs seemed to be injured, and it ran with a pitiful limp.
The traffic whizzed by it, nearly hitting it several times, scaring it so much that it didn’t dare to move in the center of the road.
Sophie had a sudden idea.
“Stop the car!”
The driver immediately slammed on the brakes and pulled over.
Alex opened his eyes and looked at her suspiciously, “What’s wrong?”
“There’s a puppy in the middle of the road, it’s dangerous.”
She threw down the word and pushed the car door open and rushed out.
“Young Madam!” The driver exclaimed and rushed out after her.
Sophie carefully approached the small dog, “Don’t be afraid, I’m here to save you.”
She spoke softly and held out her hand.
The puppy’s eyes were round and full of fear, and it kept backing away, but its movements were slowed by its leg injury.
There was an element of showmanship in her running to the dog’s rescue.
Still, her heart tightened when she saw the puppy’s pitiful appearance.
Sophie slowly squatted down and beckoned, “Puppy, come here, okay?”
Her voice was soft, afraid to scare the puppy into panicking and scurrying into traffic.
The driver rushed to her side: “Young granny, it’s too dangerous with all the cars coming and going, let me do it.”
“Don’t move yet, it looks scared, approaching it hastily might irritate it.”
Sophie stopped the driver’s movements, “Go get a blanket for me from the car.”
The driver nodded and left quickly.
Sophie slowly closes the distance with the puppy and continues to softly soothe it, “Don’t be afraid, I won’t hurt you.”
The puppy in front of her looked especially like A Huang, the small earth dog she secretly raised when she was a child.
The moment she saw Ah Huang, her heart throbbed with pain.
That puppy, which she had saved from the gates of hell, was her only childhood playmate, but was secretly sold by her aunt to a dog trader.
She cried so hard that she couldn’t catch her breath, kneeling on the ground and kowtowing, begging them not to take away Huang.
But no one cared about her feelings, and her aunt even beat her up for it.
Sophie took a step closer to the puppy and grabbed it by the back of its fateful neck when it wasn’t looking.
The puppy seemed to sense her kindness and stopped struggling, just letting out a pitiful whimper.
“There, it’s okay.” Sophie gently stroked its head and examined the injury.
Only to see that the dog was so thin that its ribs were visible, not only was there an injury on its leg, but there was also blood on its body, so it looked like it had been bullied.
The driver soon returned with a blanket.
Sophie wrapped the blanket around the dog and held it in her arms.
Alex got out of the car at some point and stood beside the car, unable to see his expression against the night color.
Sophie walked quickly to his side, “Alex, I saved a puppy.”
The excited look was like a little wife waiting for her husband’s praise.
Alex looked at her with somewhat complicated eyes, “It’s too dangerous for you to do that.”
Sophie lowered her eyes, “I’m afraid that something will happen to the puppy, I can’t help it, but don’t worry, I will be safe.”
Alex looked at her, “Get in the car, take it to the vet first.”
Sophie carried the puppy back to the car.
At that moment, Teddy woke up and opened his eyes wide, “Mommy, a dog.”
“Yeah, a puppy dog, does Teddy like dogs?”
“Love it.”
“Love it, so let’s keep it and be Teddy’s playmate, okay?”
“Yes!” Teddy was so happy that he danced around.
Sophie was coaxing the child while taking care of the puppy, occasionally stealing glances at the man beside her with her afterglow to observe his reaction.
