4 “There’s a trick to that door,” Charlie said, coming up behind her. “I know what the trick is, you need to—” “Lift it up,” Charlie finished, and together they lifted and pulled. The door glided smoothly, and they stepped out. For a moment, they stood still, braced against the wind, peering around the yard. As far as Elisabeth could tell, nothing had changed. The wind still blew, and the carriage house sat quietly in the late afternoon winter dark. No lights were on in the main house. That could mean that she was safely in her own time, with Mum still upstairs in her room. Or it could mean that Charlie’s sister and mother had left for North Adams on their visit to Aunt Sarah.
