15 Shawn didn’t take them via the interstate, but chose the forty-mile-an-hour state highway that ran due west out of Greenleigh. They passed long stretches of frozen cornfields with last autumn’s debris still cluttering the ground and dark woods hanging over tumble-down stone walls. There were no streetlights—who would need streetlights on a country road between two small New England towns? Charlie had his nose to the window, occasionally yelping aloud at the speed of the car.
