The Call of Shadows

504 Words
Minji’s decision to return to her music was met with a surge of anticipation, but with it came an unexpected undercurrent of unease. As the days passed, she felt a strange, magnetic pull to something that she couldn't quite explain. The music was hers, but it was as though the melodies had begun to take on a life of their own—darker, more haunting, and impossible to ignore. One evening, she found herself at the studio late again, the dim lights casting long shadows across the room as she experimented with a new track. Her fingers moved across the strings of her guitar with an urgency she hadn’t expected. The sound that filled the space was raw and jagged, unlike anything she had ever created before. It felt like an echo of something deep inside of her—something she had long buried. Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. Minji’s heart skipped. She wasn’t expecting anyone, especially this late. She hesitated for a moment before getting up and opening it, revealing a figure standing in the doorway. Her breath caught in her throat when she saw who it was. Jin, an old acquaintance from her past. He was someone she had once known, someone who had vanished just as quickly as he had appeared. His deep, penetrating eyes met hers, and for a moment, time seemed to freeze. "Minji," he said, his voice low and familiar, sending a chill down her spine. "I knew you'd be here. I heard your music... It’s different now. More... honest." Minji swallowed hard, unsure of how to respond. There was something unsettling about his presence, but at the same time, she felt drawn to him, like there was a force beyond her control pulling them together. "What are you doing here?" she asked, her voice betraying a mixture of curiosity and caution. Jin stepped into the studio, his gaze never leaving hers. "I’ve been watching you. You’re not the same girl you once were, Minji. You’ve changed… But I can see the shadows in your music. You’re trying to escape something, aren’t you?" Minji recoiled slightly, her hands instinctively clutching her guitar. “I’m not running from anything,” she said, though the words felt hollow in her own ears. She wasn’t sure if she was lying to him or to herself. Jin gave her a knowing smile. “You can’t hide from the dark, Minji. It’s always with you, and it will always call you back.” She didn’t understand what he meant, but the weight of his words lingered in the air, heavy and ominous. As he turned to leave, he paused at the door, his voice softer now. "I’m not the only one who’s been watching, Minji. Be careful who you trust." The door clicked shut behind him, leaving Minji standing alone in the dimly lit studio. His words echoed in her mind like a haunting refrain, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that something dark was waiting just around the corner.
