I didn't know how much time had passed before I slowly regained consciousness. When I opened my eyes, I saw treetops swaying gently above me. The sunlight was harsh, making me squint. Once my eyes adjusted, I noticed Joyce and Anna carrying a makeshift stretcher with me strapped to it. Joyce walked in front, a rope tied around her neck. Betty led the group, holding the other end of the rope as she walked slowly through the forest. Judging by the distance, we were less than a mile from our camp.
