Chapter 9 – One Last Goodbye

643 Words
Henry couldn’t remember walking into the intensive care unit. Later, he would remember the smell of antiseptic, the soft hum of machines, and the pale blue curtains separating one bed from another. But he would never remember how he got there. A nurse stopped outside Room 314. “You can go in now,” she said quietly. Henry’s hand trembled as he pushed the door open. The room was almost silent. Chloe lay motionless beneath crisp white blankets. Bruises marked one side of her face. A bandage wrapped around her forehead. Machines breathed beside her, filling the room with slow, mechanical rhythm. For one terrifying second, Henry almost didn’t recognize her. Then he saw her hand. The engagement ring was still there. The same ring he’d slipped onto her finger eight months earlier on a rainy bridge. His legs nearly gave out. He walked to her bedside and gently took her hand. It felt colder than it should have. “I’m here,” he whispered. His voice broke. “I’m so sorry I took so long.” No answer. Only the steady beeping of the heart monitor. Henry leaned forward until his forehead rested against her hand. “You promised we’d have dinner tonight.” A tear landed softly on the blanket. “You promised.” ⸻ Hours passed without meaning. Doctors came and went. Nurses checked machines. Family members arrived. Chloe’s parents stood quietly near the window, holding each other together as though letting go would mean falling apart. No one spoke very much. There weren’t any words big enough. Late that evening, Chloe’s fingers moved. Henry looked up immediately. “Chloe?” Her eyelids fluttered open. They were heavy. Clouded with pain. But they found him. A faint smile appeared. “You… made it.” Henry let out a sob that sounded almost like a laugh. “I’m here.” She tried to squeeze his hand. “I’m sorry…” “No.” “You don’t have to apologize.” “I ruined… dinner.” He shook his head over and over. “I don’t care about dinner.” Another weak smile crossed her face. “I know.” She struggled to breathe. “I love you.” Henry’s tears wouldn’t stop. “I love you too.” “So much.” “You hear me?” She blinked slowly. “I hear you.” “You don’t have to say anything else.” Her eyes drifted toward the engagement ring. “You would’ve looked… handsome…” Henry laughed through tears. “You never even saw the suit.” “I didn’t… need to.” Silence settled gently between them. Not uncomfortable. Just full. Full of six years together. Full of memories too precious for words. After several moments, Chloe whispered something so quietly Henry almost missed it. “Promise me…” “Anything.” “Live.” Henry closed his eyes. “I can’t.” “You can.” She took another slow breath. “…for me.” He rested his forehead against hers. “I promise.” The heart monitor continued its steady rhythm. Then… It changed. One long tone filled the room. Doctors rushed inside. Henry felt someone pulling him back. He refused to let go of her hand. “Please!” Someone gently pried his fingers away. “No!” “Henry…” “No!” The room became a blur of voices. Someone cried. Someone prayed. The machines finally fell silent. And so did Chloe Bennett. ⸻ Long after everyone else had left the room, Henry stood outside the hospital beneath the cold night sky. Rain had stopped. The city moved on as though nothing had happened. Cars drove past. Streetlights glowed. People laughed somewhere across the road. Henry looked up at the empty sky. For the first time in six years… He was completely alone.
