*CHAPTER 8: Break The Curse*
The door exploded inward.
Wood and stone flew everywhere.
The Coven leader stepped through the smoke, eyes locked on me.
“Elena Hart. The marked one.”
Duke Alaric Blackthorn moved.
He didn’t think. He didn’t hesitate.
He grabbed my face with both hands and kissed me.
Hard. Desperate. Like it was the last thing he’d ever do.
My dagger clattered to the floor.
His lips were cold at first. Then hot.
And the second we touched—
Fire.
The mark on my wrist exploded with black light.
The veins on his neck shot down his arms and into me.
I gasped into his mouth and he swallowed the sound.
This wasn’t a kiss.
This was a vow.
Blood to blood. Life to life.
I saw everything.
His childhood. The curse. The woman with my face who cursed him 200 years ago.
And I felt it too. The centuries of loneliness. The pain.
“Enough,” the Coven leader screamed. “You’ll kill each other!”
Alaric broke the kiss only to growl at her. His eyes were completely black now.
“Touch her and see what happens.”
The light between us faded.
My wrist stopped burning.
The black crescent mark was still there... but now there was a second mark next to it.
His. A matching scar.
He pulled back just an inch. Forehead to mine. Breathing hard.
“Elena,” he whispered. Like a prayer. Like a curse.
“The vow is sealed. If I die, you die. If you die, I die.”
I should’ve been scared.
Instead I reached up and touched his scarred cheek.
“Then we don’t die,” I whispered back.
The Coven leader laughed. “Congratulations. You’re bound. Now the curse has TWO hosts to feed on.”
Alaric’s head snapped up. Fury.
“What did you do?”
“I didn’t break the curse, Lord Blackthorn,” she smiled.
“I made it stronger.”
