The cold Face

Narrator's pov The air inside Montgomery Enterprises was always sterile, a carefully curated blend of sharp steel and sleek glass that reflected the ambition of its CEO. The vast glass windows offered a breathtaking view of the city below, thousands of people rushing, unaware of the world they were below. The floors gleamed in polished perfection, as if the company itself never allowed for any imperfection or imperfection of thought. Everything about the office, from its towering marble columns to the modern sculptures scattered throughout, screamed power. It was a kingdom, and Noah Montgomery was its ruler. Noah Montgomery, the CEO of Montgomery Enterprises, was a man who exuded an air of absolute control. His cold blue eyes were piercing, his jaw always clenched as though even the thought of relaxation was an affront to him. At 32, Noah was a man used to getting what he wanted, and there was no room for negotiation, only results. His reputation was built on his ability to make ruthless decisions, to cut down anyone who got in his way without a second thought. He didn’t believe in softness, didn’t see the value in anything that couldn’t be quantified by numbers or results. Emotions were weaknesses, and he had no time for them. Noah had built Montgomery Enterprises from the ground up, turning it into a global empire, a brand that meant luxury, status, and success. His ruthless approach to business and personal relationships alike had earned him respect, fear, and a reputation that made people wary of even looking him in the eye. There was no room for error, no space for anything that didn’t contribute to his success. Evelyn’s first real meeting with Noah Montgomery happened on a rainy Wednesday afternoon. She had only been working at the law firm for a few days, still getting her bearings, when she received an unexpected call from Zoe. "Hey, Evelyn, I know things have been crazy for you lately, but I have a favor to ask. The company needs someone to help out on an urgent project. They're looking for a temp assistant, and I recommended you. They're tough, but if you can manage Noah’s schedule, this will be good for you. You’ll meet him later today." Evelyn blinked, unsure if she had heard right. "Noah Montgomery?" "Yes, Noah Montgomery. The CEO himself," Zoe confirmed. "Don’t worry, I’m sure you can handle it. Just be professional and don’t let anything rattle you. You’re smart, you’ll figure it out." Walking into Montgomery Enterprises for the first time, Evelyn couldn’t help but feel small. It was unlike any office she had ever seen—so big, so intimidating. Even the air inside seemed cold, artificial, designed to suppress any hint of human warmth. She made her way through the grand lobby, heart racing as she wondered what she had gotten herself into. Zoe’s instructions had been clear: meet with Noah, manage his schedule, and make sure nothing went wrong. She wasn’t expecting a warm welcome, but she hadn’t anticipated how daunting the experience would be. When Noah finally entered the room, Evelyn stood up straight, adjusting her glasses. He walked in like a force of nature—tall, commanding, his crisp black suit tailored to perfection. His gaze swept over her briefly, assessing her with the kind of cold indifference that made her skin crawl. His eyes were sharp and unsettling—an icy blue that felt like they could pierce right through her. His jaw was sharp, lips pressed into a thin line. Everything about him screamed power, arrogance, and control. “Evelyn,” he said, his voice deep and detached. It wasn’t a greeting. It was a simple acknowledgment, as though he were addressing a subordinate. “Mr. Montgomery,” she replied, trying her best to steady her breath. Noah didn’t bother with pleasantries. “I don’t have time for small talk. I need you to get my meetings in order. I don’t need you to question my decisions or waste my time. Just do what I tell you.” Evelyn nodded quickly, feeling the weight of his gaze, but trying to stay focused. “Understood, sir.” Without another word, Noah sat behind his sleek desk, his hands folding neatly in front of him as he reviewed papers, each move purposeful, deliberate. It was clear that this was a man who didn’t waste a single second. Evelyn spent the next hour organizing his schedule, her hands shaking as she worked, trying to keep up with his orders. She could feel Noah’s eyes on her occasionally, but he didn’t speak to her again. He was like a machine—calculating, ruthless, the epitome of efficiency. For the next few days, Evelyn found herself working closely with Noah, running errands, managing his meetings, and making sure that everything on his calendar went without a hitch. Every interaction with him felt like she was walking on eggshells. His cold demeanor never wavered, and he didn’t seem to care one bit about her well-being. If anything, he was annoyed by her presence, as though her existence in the same space as him was a necessary inconvenience. One particular morning, as Evelyn sat at her desk, trying to organize the incoming files for the day, Noah stormed into the office. His expression was as cold as always, but there was a clear edge to his anger today. “Where’s the report on the new venture?” he demanded, his voice harsh, a glimmer of frustration breaking through his usual icy exterior. Evelyn glanced at her desk, searching for the file. She was sure she had finished it the night before, but in the chaos of the morning, she had misplaced it. “I...I’m sorry, Mr. Montgomery. I must have misplaced it. I’ll find it immediately.” Noah narrowed his eyes, the impatience in his posture evident. “You’ve had plenty of time to get your act together. I don’t have time for mistakes.” Evelyn quickly scrambled to search her desk and the cabinets, panic rising in her chest. She knew she couldn’t afford to mess up in front of him. But as she continued looking, Noah’s presence loomed over her like a storm cloud, his frustration radiating off him. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Evelyn found the report at the bottom of a pile of papers. Her hands trembled as she handed it to him. “Here it is,” she said, her voice slightly shaky. Noah didn’t even glance at her. He took the report and walked out of the office without a word, leaving Evelyn standing there, feeling as though she had just narrowly escaped a disaster. Later that afternoon, Zoe stopped by to check in on Evelyn. “How’s everything going?” she asked with a sympathetic smile. Evelyn looked up from her desk, her face pale. “I don’t know how much longer I can keep up with this. He doesn’t even acknowledge me unless I make a mistake. It’s like I’m invisible to him.” Zoe frowned. “That’s just how he is. Trust me, you’re not the only one who feels that way. But he’s tough on everyone. You’ve got to hold your ground, okay?” Evelyn nodded, but the weight of Noah’s cold indifference was already taking its toll. She couldn’t deny it anymore, Noah Montgomery was nothing like the man she had imagined. He wasn’t just a boss who wanted results; he was a man who demanded perfection in everything, who wouldn’t hesitate to cut anyone down who didn’t meet his impossible standards. And Evelyn realized, in that moment, that she wasn’t the only one who felt small in his presence. Noah didn’t think of Evelyn as anything. To him, she was just another employee, another cog in the well-oiled machine of Montgomery Enterprises. Her name meant nothing to him. Her past, her struggles—none of that mattered. All that mattered to Noah was results, and Evelyn was just another assistant, just another tool to help him run his empire. Noah didn’t have room for anything that didn’t serve his ambitions. Certainly not Evelyn. She wasn’t the first assistant to falter under his pressure, and she wouldn’t be the last. He had no interest in getting to know her or anyone else at a personal level. She was nothing more than a blip in the grand scheme of his life. As the days passed, Evelyn continued to perform her duties with a professional facade, but every time Noah spoke to her, every time his cold eyes met hers, it became harder and harder to ignore the gnawing feeling in her chest. She had once thought she could impress him, that maybe if she worked hard enough, she would earn his respect. But now, she wasn’t so sure.
