After Paul left, Wayne cracked open a beer and sat on his couch. It was almost 4 a.m. now, and he could not sleep after all the excitement. He quickly downed the drink and let out a huge belch, rocking his apartment. Feeling satisfied and more relaxed, he spread out on his couch and closed his eyes. Carlos struggled off the floor of his bathroom and went to bed. He had weeks of fitful sleep, waking up at 3 a.m., his body tense and sore. He knew he had to do something before it killed him. For some reason, he felt the need to text Wayne. He reached for his cell phone and typed a short message: Are you awake? Wayne’s cell phone vibrated, and his eyes popped open. He usually kept his phone far away, so he didn’t wake up. Yet tonight was different. Instead of texting a reply, Wayne called.
