Carlos and Wayne waited until Steve left his apartment to teach his classes. He would be gone for at least five hours. As they watched Steve enter his car and drive off, they knew this was their Rubicon moment: the point of no return. They would be breaking the law. They were both nervous; Wayne bit his fingernails and Carlos’s foot tapped on the pedal and the car.
“Should we go now?” asked Wayne, mid-bite.
“No, not yet. We should wait until his class begins in about twenty minutes. He might have forgotten something.”
Twenty minutes felt like an eternity. Carlos’s stomach rumbled. He had not eaten anything since the morning. This was a huge step in the wrong direction, and he knew it. He was bringing Wayne into it. If things went south, he knew he would not be able to forgive himself. B
