Hunting Down Old Ghosts

3900 Words
Dressing for the evening moving cautiously through my mansion. Waking early, trying not to be noticed by anyone else in the coven, sticking to the shadows that lined the walls. Moving to the front door seizing the knob in my hand turning it and pushed the door open. "Christopher, where are you going so early?" It was Peter. Slouching my shoulders, should have known he would have found me trying to sneak out. If anyone would know it would be him. "I am going out, Peter. I am going to go look for Veronica. Don't let the coven know I am gone, stick to my room like I am in there like I always am." Turning to walk out the door Peter rested his hand on my shoulder stopping me from my exit. Turning my eyes toward him, he looked almost humble."Be careful My Lord." smiling he dropped his hand and bowed and was gone back to my room. Smiling watching him return, as I slipped out into the night. Moving with the shadows of my lawn bounding over the gate in one swift bound, and started running toward the town. Not sure where she would be, but knowing that I would find her tonight, if I had to stay out all night long. Moving with the shadows opening up all my senses to find her. Moving like a jaguar through the streets never being noticed by the people walking the streets, passing them with ease, catching a whiff of her. Stopping studying the air to find where it was coming from. It was unusual, having her smell mixed with animal? Was she eating animals? Moving toward the scent finding my self next to an old cemetery with one very old tree that looked like it was going to fall down and a rusted rod iron gate surrounding the small cemetery. She was in here I could smell her, it was too strong now. Hearing something from the mortuary. moving into he middle of the cemetery hiding behind one of the tombstones. Seeing her exit the mortuary with a dog. "Come on Memphis let's be swift tonight." I heard her say to her dog as she closed the door to the mortuary. The dog was sniffing the ground around him and seeing him catch my scent. The hair on his back stood up and his eyes started to glow, as he growled a very low menacing growl staring in my direction. Veronica spun around in all the grace of a jungle cat could have and crouched down surveying what was around her. A low hiss escaped her throat as she moved up behind the tombstone I was hiding behind. The dog was now in front of me daring me to move. Pushing myself into the tombstone trying to get away from her dog I started to sweat. The dog moving closer inch by inch. "Veronica! Call off you dog!" I yelled as the dog still crept closer to me."Memphis" Is all she said, the dog relaxed and sat in front of me staring at me with his greenish yellow eyes. Letting out a breath, breathing heavily against the tombstone, rain started to fall around me. Watching Veronica move to stand next to her dog, she patted him on the head as she turned her eyes on me.Leaving me motionless and speechless with her beauty. Her snow white hair fell down her shoulders and down her back, her eyes looking at me felt like they was touching my soul with the hint of blue shining through them staring at me. "What are you doing here Christoper?" her voice was like a melody with the hint of wind chimes as she spoke. How I dreamed of her calling out my name in her voice of melodies, while I made love to her.

"What are you doing here Christopher?" Standing before the half frightened vampire as he stared up at me. Not understanding why he was here and how did he find me? The sun had barely set and he is done here in front of me. Have to give it to Memphis he smelled him out before I noticed that anyone was here. Patting Memphis on the head and seeing he look at me with all the love an animal could have in his eyes I smiled down at him. I loved Memphis he was my companion through the night. Hearing Christopher breath out a breath turning my loving gaze to cold in a fraction of a second. Growing annoyed that he didn't answer my question snapping my fingers slightly Memphis was alert and growling and barking at Christopher. If it was possible he turned two shades whiter. Laughing out loud not taking my eyes off of him while he pressed himself into the tombstone he had hidden behind. "Please Veronica, I just wanted to see you. Call him off!" Raising my eye brow looking down at the vampire king and what a mess he was in right now. Scared since less by my dog I couldn't help, but smile. "Memphis, sit" On command Memphis stopped and sat down next to me. Christopher jumped up then on his feet as he looked down at me. Breathing heavy staring at me with his clear sea blue eyes. Still not understanding why he is here and why he is risking his life to talk to me. Killing him would be easy enough, but just a thought of that sent a unexplained feeling of dread coursing through my heart. Shocked by what I just felt run through my body not understanding it, having killed numerous people and vampires alike never once feeling anything, never losing a days rest from anything that I have ever done. Now just to think of a way that I could possible kill this vampire in front of me my heart ached. Looking up to Christopher I could see in his eyes he was confused just as I was. He was confused because I was confused and he didn't understand why I was confused and I was confused because it actually hurt to think about killing him and I didn't understand why I felt that. Breathing heavy stepping away from him looking toward the city. It was a peaceful night the breeze blew gently as the rain fell effortlessly to the ground. My clothes stuck to my very skin from the rain. I could make out my breath as I breathed in and out of my mouth from the chill in the air it turned into a light white mist. Turning back to Christopher who was standing in front of me with not fear, but of another emotion that I was not sure how to identify furrowing my eye brows at him and pruning my lips, looking down to Memphis who was obediently sitting next to me with his eyes glued to the vampire in front of him. "Go hunt Memphis." Memphis turned his head to up to me as if to say are you sure. "Go on." I motioned with my hand for him to go. Looking at me a second longer he took off through the graveyard like a ghost running through the graveyard as he leap over the tombstones and falling trees into the woods. Watching Memphis disappear in the woods turning my eyes back to Christopher that was just as impressed with watching Memphis bound through the graveyard, I smiled. Turning his head toward me he looked me in the eyes and smiled a gentle smile at me. " You want to talk to me do you not?" I asked him raising my eyebrows at him to proceed on what he wanted to say.I didn't like feeling like this, the way he made me feel was just to much to bear." I believe in you, I can see through all you empty lies, please trust me." Looking up in his eyes shocked by what he just said to me my breath came out more ragged trying to control my emotions in front of him. The feelings that I felt for him long ago was now on the surface in fear of boiling over to the surface. Not knowing whether I could trust him or not I had to think, I had to get away and think about what he just said. My empty lies, did he know that I never would hurt him no matter what he has done to me in the past that I could never physically hurt him. Confusing was writing all over my face as I stared up in his eyes. He seemed to be struggling as much as I was to hold his composure from me as I was him. Thunder boomed above our heads and lighting lit up the sky. As my breaths came out more in a panic, he reached for me with water flowing over his face from the rain beating down upon us. Pulling me near him wrapping his arm around my waist as he looked down at me. "Don't do this Veronica. Don't run from me." His eyes were pleading for me to stay with him, to be with him. He wanted me just as much as I wanted him, I knew that he did I could feel it. My mind was in warp speed as looking up at the sky with the thunder booming every few second and the lighting making a show like fireworks across the sky for

their grand finale. Shaking resting my arms on his and looking up into his eyes, trembling from the look in his eyes, it was the look of love as he held my eyes. I have never been in love, not even when I was a human. These feelings that overwhelmed me was a feeling were more altering than any other feeling I have ever felt. I have lived so long by myself, that I did not know how to adjust to these new flowing feeling that were now boiling over the surface for all to see. Christopher smiled gently down at me as he wrapped his arms tighter around my waist pulling me closer to him. My breath was coming so fast that I could barely control it. His chest heaved as he could not control his breathing as I. Moving one hand up my side to cup my face he rested his forehead against mine, my senses were screaming from his touch, the genteelness of how he held me close to him the way he slowly moved to capture every single second that we were sharing. Ever so gentle he moved his lips toward mine, feeling his breath against my cheek, tasting his sweet breath that flowed from him. He kissed my cheek from the touch of his lips I shuttered and held fiercely onto his arms holding me, he moved his lips closer to my lips making little gentle butterfly kisses on the way. Closing my eyes feeling his lips making their way and briefly making contact on my lips with his. It was like he was tasting the wine before he indulged himself with the whole bottle. My breathing was more frantic as waiting never opening my eyes for him to kiss me with all the love that I seen in his eyes. Another little kiss on my lips before he fully took charge. Crushing my lips with his, tasting, feeling each others as we stood in the rain of my cemetery. My soul seemed to stir with each second of his lips laying against mine, my heart which was a big ball of ice seemed to be melting from his embrace. We was glued together as his hands roamed greedily over my body, mine grabbed a hold of the back of his tousled brown hair pulling him closer to my lips not wanting him to let go. His tongue danced around in my mouth tasting me as mine tasted him, a slight moan came up from my mouth as he released his lips from mine moving down my chin. Kissing me the whole way to my neck, my eyes popped open to stare at the sky, seeing the clouds swirl around the moon my fangs exploded in my mouth, as he bite me. Shock rippled through my body with a pleasure that I have never felt before rolled over me. Grabbing a hold of his back as he held me drinking from me, grabbing a hold of the jacket he had on I flung him to the mortuary, the force of his body hitting the door shattered it into a million pieces. Stone was laying everywhere as the the dust swirled in the air from the impact and the stones being disturbed. Standing in the door way before Christopher could even realize what happened giving him an icy look, with the howling of the wind swirling my hair around my face. A low hiss came up through my throat. Sitting up dusting himself off he sat and looked at me, with stone dust covering his face all I could make out was his eyes as the rest was gray from the dust. "Veronica" he stuttered "what's wrong?" Giving him an evil smile licking the top of my lip with my tongue "So you wish to dance with the Devil tonight?" I saw the fear ripple through him as he lay before me not knowing what he had did wrong. Smirking moving the old mans grave to the side and gestured for him to enter the hallway below, with my hand. Looking from me to the opening under the grave sensing the confusion and conflict that was running through his mind. Standing he looked at me one last time before he climbed the steps down to the hallway. Smiling to myself, following him down the stairs, sliding the old mans grave to seal up in the hallway. Feeling his fear rise as the grave slid in place turning to him, grabbing his hand to lead him to my room at the end of the hallway.Listening to his breathing coming more frequent, smiling to myself because the fear he felt enthralled me. My senses were on full alert, reading him like a book gripping my hand following me through the musky dark hallway to a door at the end. The thrill rushing through me from his fear was almost to unbearable, it sent shocks of life through my skin that I had never felt before. He feared me so much, but the draw that he had toward me kept him locked on me to follow me to his death for as much as he knew. He didn't care and that excited me even more knowing that he would follow hell to have a little bit of heaven before he died. Having no intention to kill him, but wanting to bask in his love he had for me and the love that was so obvious in me that I didn't know how to respond to it. All I knew was fear not for my self no, but for others that I caused the fear to come out of them. The cold lonely life I lead was comforting to me taking and doing as I wished with no rules no one to answer to was how I liked to live. The new feelings that stirred in me and was awaken when he kissed me frightened me, having seen mothers throw themselves on their children to protect them for the love that they had for them. Seen grown men and women do the same for the one that they loved and I always thought that it was foolish. They was both going to die by my hand why try and stop it with being heroic? They aren't going to care once they are dead if you laid down your life first, but back in the field that night having first met Christopher feeling an ounce of how those people felt to protect what they loved no matter the ending result. Now being here with him 500 years later feeling that once again the undying need to protect him to be with him. The need that my body felt for him, that yearned for him. Stopping outside that door, looking over my shoulder to his face a gentle smile filled his face. Turning my head back to my door, turning the door knob, pushing open my door to lead him in my room. A tiny smile hugged my lips with joy. Long Time Coming
Pacing back in forth in Christopher's room, worrying about him. Leaving so early barely before the sun set to find Veronica. None of us knew anything about her, but that she was old and first handed seen her control the weather. Stopping in front of Christopher's desk resting my hands on the desk leaning over closing my eyes. Letting out a breath, I should have followed him, I shouldn't have let him go, well at least I should have on insisted to go along with him. He could be dead for all I knew. Then the coven would have my head if he didn't come back, if she did kill him, since being the last one to have seen him before he disappeared. Four hours have pasted and he still has not returned, giving him another hour before me and a few will go looking for him. Standing up off the desk turning Marissa was standing in the middle of the room staring at me. Shocked that I didn't hear her enter, composing my self before speaking to her clearing my throat. "Yes, Marissa what is it that you need?" Marissa eyed me for a long moment before she responded to my question. "Where is the King? I know that he isn't here, where did he go?" Her face held almost a look of hatred as she talked to where the king might be. Surprised with how she knew that the King was not at the mansion, wondering if she was up this evening when he left. Studying her features and reading her mood, feeling jealousy, hatred, and pure curiosity. Puzzled on why she felt this way. " The King is out hunting, I don't know why your interest is so high when you know that he makes his leave every night to venture out and feed." Stepping yet again a step closer to the female vampire that was standing in front of me, her emotions were being hysteric flipping from rage to jealousy and becoming more serve in the seconds that she stood in front of me. Her face reflected nothing that I felt she stood with a blank expression and to look at her it would seem she was bored. Her eyes gave away some of the emotions rippling through her body, glimpsing a tiny hint of a flame that played behind her deep brown eyes as she watched me. "Marissa is that all you wish to speak of?" Not trusting her to be this close to me being mixed with such strong feelings. Curious of who the feelings were aimed at moving closer yet to the girl in front of me. "Marissa, is that all?" She stood in front of me not moving and not seeming to hear what I was speaking of. The emotions that I felt coursing through her was holding her captive to them. Her eyes danced with the flame brightly burning behind them now, as I looked at her. Closing the distance between her and I placing my hand on her shoulder giving a light squeeze to try and bring her out of her trance like state. My eyebrows were furrowed as placing my other hand to rest on her other shoulder "Marissa, answer me." Shaking lightly with my arms on her shoulders to get a response out of this girl. Her face flickered with recognition as the flame died out of her eyes that were now looking deeply into mine. "I am fine. Sorry to have kept you." Marissa murmured as she turned and walked out of the King's room. Why was she feeling rage and jealousy at the King's absence, he always leaves the mansion once a night to feed. Usually he is gone no more than an hour. Than he is back here, normally I am with him when he travels out, but of course not tonight. Still why is Marissa having such strong emotions over the King. They have no lovers quarry, she resides here for the safety of the protection of the coven. Still standing in the middle of the room lost in thought a knock came to the door, stirring me out of my thoughts. Shaking my head to clear my head, "Yes." "It is Nathaniel may I enter?" Ah he must be here to fix the window Veronica smashed out with her leave. "Yes you may enter." Watching the door as Nathaniel made his entrance looking to me than to the Christopher's desk with a slight hint of curiosity in his eyes, indeed he had the things he needed to fix the broken window. "I have come to fix the window for the King." Nodding and motioning with my hand for him to proceed "Nathaniel where is Marcus?" Nathaniel done to the window removing the boards that they had put in place last night turned slightly still pulling on the board. "He is downstairs with the rest of the coven." "Will you go and ask him to come up here I would like to speak with him." Pulling the board down sitting it against the wall he nodded toward me and made his leave to get Marcus. Turning to sit in the chair opposite the King's desk I rested in the chair and gazed out the window. Where are you Christopher. another hour had passed and still he had not returned to the safety of the coven. Resting my head in my hand rubbing slightly, he would be the death of me, with this woman. Another knock came to the door "Come in" Raising my head Nathaniel had done made his way to the broken window and started to work. "You wished to speak with me, Sir." Exhaling as I stood up to face Marcus "I wish for to keep an eye on Marissa. Something is bothering her. I do not know what it is, but I can since that she is in a state of great need of something. Just keep an eye on her for the next few nights. Can you do that for me Marcus?" Placing my hand on his shoulder feeling the curiosity that filled him with my asking him to keep an eye on her. "Oh and Marcus don't let her know that you are watching her. I don't want to set her off if all possible." Nodding in understanding "Is that all Sir? Do you wish for me to start now?" "Yes go and watch her and report back to me whatever you find." "Yes, Sir" Turing Marcus took leave to watch Marissa. Her rage still had me bewildered as she stood in the room with me. Moving back to the chair that I just stood from, slumping back down resting my head back placing my hand over my eyes listening to Nathaniel fixing the window.
