Ranks

Why is she behaving that way, or has it always been like that?"karl said looking at me. I didn’t answer; I just followed from behind, my heart beating heavily. I don’t know how it will be, but I will try, I said to myself as we entered the hall of the school, followed by the long stairs that lead to the hostels. Clara led the way to a room, pushed it open, and dropped Syra's bag. Karl moved forward, dropped my bag, and turned to leave before stopping in front of me. "Take this." He handed me a card. "That’s my number, but it only works at midnight. During the day, if you ever want to talk, come to the back of the school gate. You will at least see me there by twelve noon." He turned and left. "Boring..." Clara said, and they all started laughing. "If you want a boring life, then those are the kind of people you associate with," Flora said, looking at me. She turned immediately and left. "Syra, I will see you later. We have evening ranks today. Don’t miss it for anything; the high ranks will be here to display their talents. Trust me, you're going to love it and learn a lot too," Clara said, looking at Syra. "And, you might get a mate too." Syra turned to her quickly. "A mate? What does that mean?" "The older and highest ranks here come out after the show and look for beautiful newbies to pick. That was where I met my mate. I'll introduce him to you this evening." Syra smiled and clapped her hands. "Wow, I would love to meet mine too! Does it mean he would be my husband?" "Silly," Clara said, laughing. "It’s just for fun, you get what I mean. Just hope you get a real one because you would enjoy your stay here if you have a caring one; he would protect you during the hunts. And again, I heard the Quora Princess is here." I squeezed my face, still confused by what she was saying. "Quora Princess?" Syra asked, looking at her. "Yes. Anyone with the blood of Quora is said to be the one to save the Myth Kingdom, but she doesn’t know herself. She's lost, and I heard she is the highest and most unchallenged rank. Nobody knows her, but the magic gong yesterday announced her." Clara looked around and continued. "The magic gong announced: *Welcome, Quora Princess, whose identity will be known soon, and she is destined to marry the biggest prince of the universe.* No one knows who that is, either." "All these fairy tales," I found myself saying out loud. "You said what?" Clara said, looking at me. "You know what that princess has? What her father left for her? Everyone is dreaming to see her or touch her. Don’t even go there." Clara hissed and turned to go. "Please don’t be angry, Clara. My sister can be dumb sometimes." I turned to Syra with a bit of anger rising in me. "Syra!" "Oh please," Syra said. She held Clara by the hand and left. I watched them go but later stepped inside my room. The room was already arranged by the time I entered. I have always known Syra to be self-centered, but I didn’t know she would take it this far. Why would she manipulate my mind? She even dared to use it on me after Father's warning. I was about to sit down when the door opened and Syra walked in. I looked away; at the very least, I deserved an apology. She walked to her corner and picked up her bag. "Kira, I am sorry, but I will be staying with Clara. She stays alone, and mixing with them will help my powers increase so I can reach the top ranks, which is what I need." My heart beat faster, and I turned to her, but she looked away as she prepared to open the door. "Syra, what happened? Why the change of attitude since we got here? And now you don’t want to stay with me?" She stopped at the door and turned. "Kira, your life is always boring, and I can’t waste my five years here living like that. And again, Kira, I still don’t see how you will cope here without any powers. You are empty, but because you are Daddy’s girl, of course, you allowed him to push you to this because you want to be like me. Well, you are here now. Just don’t involve me in the life you choose because I am busy making one for myself. If you decide to leave anytime, I will escort you out, but if you choose to stay, just count me out of anything concerning you. I warned you earlier." She spoke and left the room, shutting the door with force behind her.
