People started murmuring behind us. I didn’t pay attention as he slowly released my hand.
"What’s with that guts, huh? Aren’t you scared? Do you know who Kendra is?"
"And do you know who Kira is? Just get the f**k off!" I didn’t know where that energy came from, but I was loving it. I walked away from him without turning to Syra, whose mouth was wide open at my sudden behavior.
I dragged Ara with me and left them there. I noticed from my side view that Kendra stood watching me, but I didn't care and walked up to my room, locking it behind me. Ara’s mouth was still open as I sat on the bed.
"Kira!! What did you just do? Do you know who that guy is? Kendra!!! Your time here is done, Kira. Just start packing your bags, we are leaving. Don't worry, I'll use this opportunity to go, too."
I released my hold on Ara, still angry. "I so much hate when men treat people like they are nothing, especially women. And I hate it anytime a man says, 'Go ask who he is!'" I turned to Ara. "Ara, is he not a human being? What more could he do to me if not bully me? Can he kill me?"
Ara still paced around the room. "Kira, you don't know what you just did!! That guy is the highest here and nobody disrespects people like that. He'll do the worst to you. If he decided to show mercy, he might spare your life, but if not... and you don't even have anything inside and you are fighting Kendra??? Kira!!!"
"Oh please, Ara, I am not scared. Let him bring it on." I went to my bag to drop my purse when the pink comb fell out. I picked it up and looked at it. I sighed and dropped it back.
"What’s that?" Ara asked.
"Nothing, Ara. But I know he is pretending. Kendra knows me, but he just wants to disgrace me in front of people. I paid him back; why is everybody now angry?"
Ara wanted to speak when a knock came at the door. Ara trembled, but I forced myself to walk to the door and open it. A boy was standing there.
"Kendra said you should come down now or he sends fliers to you! Right now!!!" The boy turned to leave.
"Hey, come back! Tell him Kira said he should f*****g go to…."
Ara pushed me from behind and turned to the boy, pleading. "Please pardon her, she is new and doesn’t know anything. Don’t tell him the last part. We are coming now, please." The boy left without saying anything, and Ara shut the door.
"Kira, listen. If you want to survive here, give respect to those who deserve it. And what do you even have? People who act like this are Challengers. They challenge ranks by rank because they have powers, but you are empty and behaving this way. If he sends fliers, do you think you can survive?"
I didn’t say anything else. I stood looking at Ara as she continued her advice.
"Come on, let’s go and see him. You kneel down and apologize."
My mood instantly flared. "Kneel down to who?"
"Don’t worry, come let’s go." Ara dragged me out of the room. As we went down, people started pointing at me and whispering, but I didn't care. Getting to the field, I noticed Kendra displaying his skills. He rode a power bike and flew with it, raising his hands in the air; with one hand, he flipped it and black birds flew around his head. People clapped and roared his name.
He saw me standing by the side, flew down, and got off his bike. People watched him as he came close to me with some other boys following behind. Ara pinched me and tried to force me to kneel, but I quickly removed her hands.
Kendra scoffed, looking at me. "Tell me," he said, squeezing his hands into a fist. "Show me what you've got. Show me now."
Kendra was about to raise his hand when someone held him from behind, hugging him.
"Kendra, please, she is my junior sister and dumb as well. She is empty, totally empty. It's only mouth she’s got. Please spare her life and don’t do what you want to do now."
People murmured and some started laughing. My mind blew with more anger. Why would Syra do that? Why would she tell everyone I am empty even if I am? Kendra walked close to me, looking at my face.
"You are empty and you have the guts to challenge Kendra?" He scoffed. "Do you know who I am? You challenged me and have no remorse?"
I didn’t move an inch. I stood with a stone-like resolve that unknowingly formed in my mind. I didn’t know where it came from.
"He is talking and you are still—" one of his friends came forward and tried to push me, but Kendra caught his hand and pushed him back.
"She is my business. Don't involve yourself." He turned back to me. "I want to know what gave you that energy!! I want to know what made you so strong in mind. I want to know you, Kira!!! Who are you?"
