The Passenger

784 Words
WHAT a day! My entire body was tired from a whole day of driving in the city. Well, being a driver of a taxicab wasn't an easy job. You'll have to find passengers or pick them up at the waiting sheds or along the sidewalks and drive them to their desired destination. Yeah, this has been part of my life cycle, my occupation actually. I glanced at my wristwatch. It's already 11 in the evening, and it's time to go home now. I dropped my last passenger at his condo unit and then decided to go home. While on my way home, I turned on the car's stereo to listen to some fancy music while driving peacefully, but of course, hoping to not encounter any misfortunes along the way. Breaking news The case of two teenagers who were run over by a taxicab is still on-going, but the primary suspect has pleaded not guilty due to a lack of evidence. However, the case is pending and the suspect is still at large. The family of the victims is yearning for justice for their beloved loved ones. I was saddened by the news. I hope they'll find justice sooner or later. "Uh-oh..." I mumbled when I realized that I had to drive across a cemetery and a desolate wide field without any lampposts along the sidewalk. There was this urban legend about a ghost showing up along the highway in the middle of the night and stopping any car. Well, it's not the first time that I drove past these two creepy places, but it's just the fact that I have to pass across every night just to get home. I'd really wished there was a shortcut that would have saved me from passing across here, but there was none. So I have to endure the feeling of fright whenever I drive across here. "Here we go... Don't think of anything silly, Aster. You'll get through this again," I muttered, just to calm myself a little bit. Here comes the exciting part... I breathed deeply as I stepped on the gas pedal to increase my speed. Hey, it's late at night. Perhaps it's okay to speed up. But then... I spotted a human figure at the distance. I squinted my eyes to see it clearly until I recognized it as a female in a white shirt and long skirt. She was extending her hand to stop the car. I doubted. I was hesitant to stop. Should I pull over or not? The next thing I knew, I pulled over and stopped in front of her, got in and sat in the back seat. A strange stench of odor immediately hovered around in the car, which made my nose crunched. I swallowed a lump in my throat. What did this woman do in the middle of the night at the cemetery? Don't tell me she's something who does not belong in the human world? And I was the i***t who stopped, thinking I was helping someone. Every now and then, I kept glancing at her in the rearview mirror. She was just sitting peacefully and hanging her head down with her messy hair covering almost her whole face. She was a little dirty. "Where is your destination, ma'am?" I asked calmly. She didn't answer. "Where are you going, ma'am?" I repeated. I'm having a bad feeling about this. "Just drive," she replied in a dead tone. I shrugged and kept driving, but my heart went wild, pounding hard. "Stop here!" she shrieked, which made me flinch. My foot abruptly stepped on the brake pedal, and the tires made a screeching sound on the cement. We stopped in front of the dark open field. My entire body stopped functioning when she moved closer to me and held my neck tightly in her cold hand. My hands trembled. I began sweating hard. I swallowed hard as I prayed that she was just kidding around. Her grip was getting tighter... But I couldn't move. I felt a terrifying energy lingering in the car. "Have you seen my sister?" she asked under her breath, but in a threatening voice. "N-No," I stammered. "I haven't." "You have," she giggled. "She's sitting beside me." I turned my head slowly behind me. All my body hairs straightened up when I saw another girl in white sitting beside her, grinning at me and terribly bloody. Now all I was feeling were chills and shivers. My heart constricted and I was almost gasping for air. "Have you heard the news about the two teenagers who got run over by a vehicle?" "Y-Yes." She laughed in a shrill voice. "The news is wrong. We'd been murdered."
