Episode 4: Deals with the Devil
6:00 AM — Ethan’s Penthouse, Manhattan
Ethan sat on his balcony, staring at the city below. The morning air was crisp, but the weight on his shoulders was suffocating. The article about his erratic behavior had already spread like wildfire, and the board was watching him closer than ever.
A half-empty whiskey glass rested beside him. His phone buzzed, snapping him from his thoughts.
Daniel: Marcus is meeting with investors today. He’s pushing for your removal.
Ethan clenched his jaw. Marcus wasn’t wasting any time. If he convinced key investors that Ethan was a liability, it would be over.
His fingers hovered over his phone. He needed to get ahead of this. He needed leverage.
And he knew exactly where to start.
7:30 AM — A Private Café in SoHo
Lena Caldwell sat across from Ethan, stirring her coffee as she studied him. “You look worse than last night.”
Ethan smirked. “You wound me.”
She leaned back. “You said you wanted to make a deal. Let’s hear it.”
Ethan set his cup down. “You want the real story? The truth about ColeTech, about Marcus, about everything happening behind closed doors?”
Lena’s expression remained unreadable. “And in return?”
“You bury that article,” Ethan said. “Or at least give me a chance to shape the narrative.”
Lena smirked. “So you’re asking me to lie?”
“No,” Ethan said. “I’m asking you to wait. You want the truth? I’ll give it to you. But if I go down now, you’ll only get the surface-level scandal. Stick with me, and I’ll show you what really happens at the top.”
Lena tapped her nails against the table, considering. “You’re a gambler, Ethan.”
He smiled. “Only when I know I can win.”
She exhaled. “Fine. You’ve got my attention. But if I find out you’re feeding me more lies, I won’t hold back.”
Ethan raised his cup in a mock toast. “I wouldn’t expect anything less.”
10:15 AM — ColeTech Headquarters
Ethan strode into the executive suite, where Daniel was waiting.
“I need everything we have on Marcus,” Ethan said.
Daniel raised an eyebrow. “What are you planning?”
Ethan poured himself a coffee. “If he wants to play dirty, I’ll show him just how dangerous that can be.”
Daniel sighed. “You’re not exactly in a position to make threats.”
Ethan smirked. “Who said anything about threats?”
Daniel hesitated, then handed him a file. “Marcus has been making some… questionable investments. Offshore accounts. Money moving in and out of shell companies.”
Ethan flipped through the pages. “This is exactly what I need.”
Daniel crossed his arms. “If you’re wrong about this, it could backfire.”
Ethan closed the file. “Then I guess I’d better be right.”
12:30 PM — Marcus’s Private Office
Marcus Langley was sipping a glass of bourbon when Ethan walked in unannounced.
“You always did have a habit of skipping appointments,” Marcus said, setting his glass down.
Ethan smirked. “And you always had a habit of underestimating me.”
Marcus gestured to a chair. “So, what’s this about? Here to make a deal? Or just here to beg?”
Ethan tossed the file onto the desk. “I thought you’d like a preview of tomorrow’s headlines.”
Marcus picked up the file and skimmed through it. His jaw tightened. “Where did you get this?”
Ethan leaned in. “That doesn’t matter. What matters is that I have enough to make your investors very uncomfortable.”
Marcus closed the file slowly. “You’re bluffing.”
Ethan chuckled. “Am I?” He leaned back. “I could leak this to the press right now. Watch the SEC come knocking. You’d be too busy dealing with federal investigations to take my company.”
Marcus’s eyes darkened. “What do you want?”
Ethan smirked. “I want you to back off. No more meetings with investors. No more attempts to undermine me. You stay in your lane, and I won’t destroy you.”
Silence stretched between them.
Then, Marcus laughed. “Clever, Ethan. But you and I both know the real game isn’t played with files and scandals. It’s played with patience.”
Ethan stood. “Then let’s see who has more of it.”
As he walked out, he felt something he hadn’t in weeks.
Control.
8:45 PM — Lena’s Apartment, Brooklyn
Lena opened the door, eyebrow raised. “Twice in one day? I must be special.”
Ethan smirked. “I told you I’d give you a real story.”
She crossed her arms. “And?”
Ethan handed her a flash drive. “Everything you need to know about Marcus Langley.”
Lena raised an eyebrow. “Why give me this?”
Ethan exhaled. “Because I need to get ahead of him. And because you’re the only person in this game who isn’t just looking for power.”
Lena studied him. “You really think you can win this?”
Ethan’s smirk returned. “I don’t play games I can’t win.”
She pocketed the flash drive. “Then let’s see how this plays out.”
As he walked away, he knew one thing for sure—this wasn’t over.
Not by a long shot.
